New IH gauges fcub

Postby BigBill » Mon Sep 02, 2019 5:52 pm

I purchased a new oil IH pressure gauge with copper tubing and fittings and a new IH 12 v amp gauge, both gauges have lights, no problem. How much oil pressure needle number wise should the oil pressure gauge show? On my orginal color coded oil pressure gauge it was 1/8” from the high end of the orginal gauge. The engine was rebuilt.

Should it have 40 lbs or 50 lbs normal oil pressure?

I want the oil pressure and amp gauges on the dashboard.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Hi,
The Cub service manual says a Cub engine has 30 - 35 lbs of oil pressure at 1800 RPM. That is probably for a new engine. Below is the page.

http://www.farmallcub.info/manuals/gss- ... 001-08.jpg

If you bought an oil gauge that goes to 75 or more lbs, they don't work too well on a Cub, the pointer never goes to the higher part of the gauge.

The Cub oil gauges went to 40 lbs for years.

Below is a new one at TM Tractor.

Oil pressure regulator is usually about 36 psi on a Cub.
I have an excuse. CRS.

IH made a 75 pound and 45 pound (rating) oil pressure gauges. The 45 pound gauge should be the one for a Cub.

Just did a Google search; “case-ih oil gauge”. First hit was an IH gauge on Amazon. It's an IH reading 45 PSI. $30.

I’m looking for gages with the clamp on the rear with a light. Need the clamp because the oil line needs to be coiled so it sees less vibration.

This gauge?

Why didn’t IH put both gauges on the cub dash board?

Some of my Cubs have dual gauge ports on the dash, some have a blank spot that could be cut out for an oil gauge.

Simple....cost!! The cost of the copper line and fittings and the extra assembly time and chance of damage in assembly would be the reasons. The CUB was a low cost, low frills tractor designed to replace the horse and or mule on a farm. I think the oil gauge on the dash would be a nice feature.

Why install a oil pressure gauge were the operator can’t see it. Since vibration can be a factor I looped the copper tubing a few times to eliminate the chance of failure.

Not very F-Cub related, but this is what I ended up doing to add a gauge cluster on my 184.
1 flat piece of sheet metal, 2 gauges, and some tubing from Lowes. Still working on the hourmeter. This one from Steiner was a dud. I noticed they don't sell these anymore.

I didn't want to punch any new holes in the tractor, so I used a Tee off the oil filter so I could keep the idiot light sensor. Routed the copper tubing through an existing hole to the gauge. Wish I had put in 1/4" more space between the tubing and the gauge. Had to trim the gauge mounting bolts off with a dremel (or turn the gauge on its side)

All you have to do is look down......

In addition to cost, a line from the oil filter to the dash is another part to wear/fail.

When I replaced my oil gauge I plumbed in the factory switch kit for the hour meter but added a 45 degree fitting to angle the gauge outwards a bit. Very visible from the seat but in addition I wired the exciter wire for the alternator through the switch so if the amp gauge jumps up I know I have oil pressure even before I look at the pressure gauge.
