Cooling question

Postby Jack » Tue Oct 22, 2019 6:09 am

Hello all, I have a question on my cooling system. :lost:
Awhile back when I first got my cub I replaced the radiator and hoses, my question is, when I open the radiator cap I cannot see any antifreeze, I add leaving head space, the next time I look inside the radiator I dont see any antifreeze , I do not see any leaking anywhere,
I was wondering if I could of put the thermostat in upside down. Or I didn't even put one in, I dont remember. When I looked in the PDF manual, I dont see the thermostat, so does it take a thermostat or dont it?
and where is it? Top hose lower hose?
Any help would be appreciated
I know, I'm rattling on
Thank you
Jack

Cubs don't have thermostats. You should be able to see the coolant just below the pipe inside the radiator. If not, check your oil to make sure you aren't losing any that way through the head gasket/crack if you have no other leaks.

I changed the oil a couple months ago, it seem to be all old oil. The cub doesn't over heat ,
When you say pipe, are you talking about the inlet or the overflow

The pipe that the top radiator hose connects to is what I'm referring to. If you look in through the fill with a flashlight you can see it, anything over that and when it gets warm the coolant will push out through the overflow tube. At least that's what they've done for me, especially if on a small hill.

As long as you don't have any leaks, the coolant level on each Cub may be a little different. My '47 usually has coolant down just past the radiator opening, so I have to rock the tractor side-to-side to see the coolant wash over the radiator interior. My '48 completely covers the interior and is visible by just looking down into the filler neck.

Double check that you don't have any leaks somewhere. Slide a piece of cardboard under the engine and check after parking it overnight. If you get too much coolant in it, it will discharge it out the overflow tube, usually at the most inconvenient time.

When I look in the rad, I dont see any fluid at all.
The cub gets parked in a garage with concrete floor, I never see any antifreeze on the floor.
I'm guess it is coming out the overflow tube while I'm operating the cub

Use a flashlight and look off to the side, if you see coolant, don't add. It sound like it's simply seeking it's desired level and you're wasting coolant by adding to it. Relax and give it a chance!

After looking in the radiator. I cannot see the top port, its below the plate inside.
It is a Clancy radiator, dated 03/11
So I'm guess I was panicking for no reason
Thank you all
What I did find was a bad gasket at the head

Hi,
Below is a page from the 1965 Cub owner's manual telling about filling the radiator, it has a pic of the water level in the radiator, and shows the baffle below the filler cap.

Like was said above, if you use a light at an angle, you can see to the right or left of the baffle.
The tops of the radiator tubes are below the baffle some.

TM Tractor has a new gasket for the upper elbow, where it attaches to the head, if that is what you meant is leaking.
The radiator hose clamps usually need retightening after some use, the hoses can leak if the clamps are not tight. :)
