Farmall Cub

I usually post in the Cub Cadets but I've found a '49 Cub I might have to bring home. It's yellow. How rare/uncommon is a yellow '49? Does it being yellow indicate that there are going to be any other differences from a red '49? It has ag rear tires that I know have recently been replaced so I don't know what was on the rear originally.

Many governmental agencies paint or have their tractors painted yellow.

Can you post a picture of the Cub?

Stanton, before I saw who posted that photo, I thought it was Barnyard's...sure looked like a new cub finder system mounted on the rear!!!

The seller says the rear tires are new, one front needs replacing. He has not had it running and the starter will not spin the engine, but it will turn with the hand crank. The battery is bad, so the starter may be ok.

I thought that may be it. That's a repaint and the dog legs have been made out of tread plate. Also someone has opened up around the radiator filler neck.

Shane, can you tell all that by the pic or have you looked at the tractor? If you have , will you tell me more? If you are not thinking of buying it, that is. I have not seen it, live and in person. I'm about 2 1/2 hours away from where the tractor is.

That's just from looking at the picture, no I'm not interested in buying it.

Looks like the front grill is homemade, or at least the mesh has been replaced.

I am seeing a couple things I am wondering about. One is the opening around the radiator cap, never saw one quite like that. Second, what is the black handle standing up on the left side even with the steering wheel, the crank?

I wonder if it is a later model than 49, and the casting with the serial plate has been changed, that is not unusual. I notice the right steering knuckle is a clamp type rather THAN SETSCREW, SO THAT ITEM AT LEAST IS FROM A LATER YEAR.**((*$ caps lock. might need to check some casting codes, such as engine, transmission, finals, etc. to see what year it actually is. Also, am I NOT seeing a spring on the seat?

I questioned, nicely, the seller about the year model. He admits knowing little about Cubs but did know to check the serial number by a chart and confirmed that it is a '49. He also says that he can see no evidence of it being repainted. He bought it because his late father once had a bigger Farmall, and he thought restoring one would be fun. Now he says he has realized such a project is more than he can handle.

I’ve looked at the tractor. It was only about 10 minutes from where I was working yesterday. Rear tires hold air but lots of cracks. One front tire holds air but the other is flat. Doglegs are indeed homemade out of treadplate. Pto is missing and rear cover is homemade out of treadplate. Tractor has no starter no hydraulic pump and no hydraulic lines. The hood has been cut to clear an aftermarket radiator that appears to leak. The worst part is the block appears to have a crack at the right front where it bolts to the bolster but it is hard to tell for sure because of the old heavy brush paint job

The tractor also has a 12 volt conversion with alternator and distributor instead of magneto and a ragged wiring job. No battery box or proper battery cables. It’s a parts tractor at best. I made him an offer that he didn’t accept and he told me he had to have at least 350 for it. I’m not interested at that price
