Governor installation

I must be missing something, I have all the manuals and parts manual for Cubs. Had the timing gear cover plate off twice, I've lined up all the dots on the gears, taken ignition drive seal out and can see mark on idler gear but when I line up mark on governor to idler gear the governor won't go all the way in. I've got the distributor out also and can see that I've got the marks in the gear correctly. What am I doing wrong or forgetting to do?

Hi,
The governor gear should just turn slightly as you push the governor into place, because of the curved gear teeth.
I don't know what would keep it from going into place. It should just push into place.
You said the seal is not there.

is the inner housing that holds the governor drive parts all the way in to the outer housing? there is a small pin that lines them up correctly, I have seen several damaged from misalignment and being forced in

Thanks for the replies, so the the crank case cover plate I'm using now was scourced at a tractor grave yard as one of the ears that hold the fan blades broke on mine during a roll over. After posting my problems I returned to tractor to double check everything and try to install gov again. It appears that when I installed new gasket and scourced,cover plate I should have waited to tighten all of the bolts. I looks like this cover plate is out of alignment with the hole the gov slips into beyond the cover plate. So for now I'll have to order new gaskets for the cover plate, oil pan, and ignition seal and start over for the third time. ( it would have been nice if I could have welded ear back on my original cover plate)

Glen, yes the ignition seal is out and I can see that the dots connect in the idler to gov gears

Hi,
If the cover and oil pan have new gaskets, I think it will work if you loosen the bolts and align the cover, and use the same new gaskets again. My opinion.
The front cover should be left slightly loose until the crankshaft front pulley is installed, so the front seal can be centered on the pulley.
The Cub service manual, GSS-1411, says that on page 1-41, in the edition of the manual that I read on here.

I also put the governor bolts in the holes when installing the cover, just to help align it

The gaskets are sealed pretty good my luck would be that I'll ruin them. I ordered new gaskets last night and they should be here within the week. For now I'm just letting it set until they come in and then I'll take it apart again.
I used the Massey 253 with the tiller and cultivator to till and lay out some rows in my two garden spots today. I planted one 80 foot row of yellow and red onions and row of lettuce mixed with spinach,kale and beets. I love this time of year, playing with the tractors and dirt. Thanks for your replies and I'll keep ya post as to the progress when the parts get in heck may even post a pic or two

Should I be using Permatex on these gaskets?

Yes, you can use sealer on the gaskets, they might seep less over time.

Need some help again, got gov installed hook up throttle to gov and try to advance/retard throttle and it’s in a bind won’t move without a lot of force. Please give me your thoughts

Hi,
Does the arm on the governor move freely, they get tight on the pivot from no lube.
Oil it and work it loose if tight.

Below is a pic from TM Tractor of the governor.
Oil where the cotter key is in the pic, it may take time to work oil through the pivot.

Thanks, no it doesn’t pivot free. I tried to work it with channel lock pliers and sprayed with oil and sprayed penetrating oil also but doesn’t seem to get looser.

you need a little patience if that arm is froze up, keep soaking it with oil and keep trying to move, do not pry on it or it will break and you will be taking the governor off again, also there is a support bracket on the back of cylinder head for the rod from the lever to the governor arm, many times it is broke or missing

Yes that bracket was broken I made a new one to hold throttle rod in place, I took the gov back off so I’ll let it soak overnight and give it a go in the AM thanks so much for you help. I’ll keep this updated as I go or if I need more help Thanks
