Washer under spark plug cable bracket and head bolt?

When I removed the head bolt that also holds down the bracket, there was a washer under the bracket. The TC-37F parts book does not list a washer. Question: did early Cubs have this washer? There is evidence that this head had been removed before so maybe the washer was put there by the last mechanic.

The washer was dished so would have to be replace, anyway.

I don't recall ever seeing one there.

I've seen some flat washers under the head bolts to keep from cutting the bolts to a specific length. (Actually done it once myself.)

My dad used this trick on an old Sears garden tractor from the 60's.
It kept fouling plugs. After the 3rd plug, he put a flat washer under the plug as a spacer. This moved the plug up higher and it no longer fouled plugs.
I don't really know why. Perhaps it really needed a rebuild (badly) and was burning oil. At some point, the tractor head needed a helicoil due to a stripped spark plug. The machine shop put in a fairly large block of steel and drilled it for the spark plug. The block was quite thick and performed the same duty as the spacer.

Keep in mind that any washers, used under head bolts, should be hardened washers.

Agree, I think I used grade 8.
