Gas Tank Sealer

Postby bob39666 » Sun May 03, 2020 2:42 pm

I assume this topic has been discussed before, but was is the best gas tank sealer to use for rusty fuel tanks. Has anyone ever used the kit that Steiner offers?

Red Kote and POR 15 are top brands. I'm not familiar with Steiner's.

I've used RedKote. Be sure the tank is cleaned according to directions, or it won't stick properly.

I've used Red Coat several times and it works well but cleanliness is everything.

Thanks for the replies. Is there any magic concoction that you use to clean the tanks with? Has anyone ever used the rust converter stuff before in tanks. The stuff that is supposed to convert the rust into a primeable surface. I’m not really sure how it works.

I wouldn't use anything that didn't come with the kit, or was recommended to be used before lining. Most of the kits come with one or two products to clean and prepare the surface for lining. Using rust converter might keep the liner from sticking and sealing.

After its drained and clean i would use some mruiatic acid first to get the biggest part of the rust out, rinse and neutralize the acid and then do the liner as recommended by the manufacturer that you choose. I used POR 15 for my tank.

Red Kote and POR are available from your auto parts store. Follow the products directions.

AND give the product sufficient time to work. I use Red Kote and it may take a day or two to fully cure.

I have several gas tanks that I lined with Red Kote some 20 years ago. No problems.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Thanks again. I’ve read a lot of good things about both products. I’ll see which one is available locally and probably go with it.

IIRC, the POR15 kit comes with a dilute phosphoric acid wash for pre-treating/cleaning the tank. I've only used a few brands, but phosphoric acid seems to be the acid of choice.

Bofahs thanks for the response. That’s the first I’ve heard of phosphoric acid. I’ll check it out.
