Rear Seal Direction

Postby johnbartlett19 » Sat Jun 20, 2020 4:59 pm

Hi folks, replacing main seal on the back of my '49 cub engine while I have the tractor split. Bought a new seal from TM Tractor, and I know I need to expoxy it into the retainer. Just don't know which way it goes in. With the open side (where you can see the spring underneath) towards the engine or towards the clutch? thanks for any input! Awaiting your post before I mix the epoxy! Best, JB

Pack the groove where the spring is with grease, less likely to pop out when you seat the retainer and seal on the crank. (Tip from tst).

Hi,
If the new oil seal fits loose in your retainer, tst repairs rear seal retainers, machining them so a slightly bigger OD seal fits tight in the retainer.
You could write him a PM if you want to buy one.

Below is his ad from The Vine on here. :)

Don't forget to stake the seal into place.
A few taps with a hammer and punch around the retainer "near" the seal will help keep the seal from spinning and walking its way toward the crankshaft.

Is the correct size seal available at the case in dealer?

Is this the correct rear main seal.?
