"Steiner" printed on engine head??

Postby rick 48 cub » Sun Jun 21, 2020 7:09 pm

Hey ya'all,

I popped off the hood of my 1978 cub and saw that the head (between spark plugs) is stamped "STEINER".

Does this mean my cub engine or engine head is not original?

Thanks, Rick

Yeah, I've saw a couple like that, just assumed it was a steiner repo head.

Definitely means it is not the original head. If there is no cast code you know for sure.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Does that mean I can call it a "resto mod" like some of J Lenno's cars :-)

Hi,
You could look at the engine serial number, and the casting code on the engine, and see if the block was made about when the Cub was made.

Below is a page from a Cub operator's manual, showing where the engine serial number is.
It is stamped in the block, you might have to clean the area, and use a light to see it.
The Touch Control tubes might partly cover the number.
Newer engines might not say FCUBM in the engine serial number.

Below is info from TM Tractor about casting codes on Cubs. :)

I'm currently working on a FCUB for a friend that belonged to his grandfather. It has a Steiner head on it. I'm guessing it was replaced because of freezing. It has cast in it MADE IN USA.
