Cubs and grass cutting

Yesterday I had the enjoyment of using both my cubs, 58 LoBoy and 63 Cub, for several hours cutting grass. Very relaxing at the end of the day. The Loboy has a 59 Woods and the Cub a 42". I am guessing like most here on the forum my cubs use are for enjoyment because most have other means of cutting grass faster. That said, both tractors look great and run great. While I always wanted a LoBoy, the more I use the 63 Cub the more I like it. The 42" deck has a lot less noise and the turning radius is a lot better. While the Loboy may cut a wider path, those 3 blades are substantially louder. Since I am not in hurry when cutting with these, the smaller cut is not a issue. It may be time to start looking for a 42" deck for the LoBoy.

I like my cub with the 59” woods. It takes 3 hours to mow everything. I put my Bose headphones on and listen to music. I’m sure I could cut the time down with a modern zero turn, but why?

I have an Exmark that cuts three acres at hour. If I am in a time crunch I will use it, I prefer cutting with the Cubs or my Gravely walk behinds.

Welcome to the wonderful world of serene lazy mowing.
I've been mowing my 5 acres with my '48 Cub with a Woods 59 for 25 yrs. Takes about 3 1/2 to 4 hrs on average. That's 4 hrs of seat time once a week from April until November. What could be better than that?

I wish I enjoyed it. Maybe it's because of my heavily wooded property or I'm listening to the wrong music. I find it a chore I dislike and wonder how those mowing crews keep their sanity.

I have Bluetooth headphones, and listen to my (free from the library) books on tape downloaded onto my phone via Overdrive App.

I use my Late Fathers 68 Lo-Boy to mow for my Mom, she has about 4 3/4 acres of lawn and I really like using the Lo-Boy, we have an old Scag Zero turn with a blown engine and I am in no hurry to finish swapping the engine , I will get back on it when its cooler out, but I find the Lo-boy so much more relaxing I get lost in my thoughts and mow! My 1950 cub with 42 inch woods cuts grass at my farm every other week. We also have a deere riding mower and a deere 950 with a finish mower. And usually I have a nephew and great nephew helping. I prefer the cub over the others. It mows the yard as good as the riding mower except for right around the house and trees and does a better job than the finish mower in heavier grass around my pond

Well, I think I found the reason my Woods 42 mower on one of my guys was doing a less than perfect job last week. Figured it was just time to sharpen the blades. So I removed them from 2 mowers, and as I was taking the last one off, I realized one blade was on upside down, meaning the UNsharpened side was now the "cutting" edge!!! Must have been late in the day last time I put that blade back on. Been mowing that way, though, for a few months! Just shows the DON'T need a razor sharp edge!

I mow part of the hunting property with swinging brush hog blades on the 42.
No rush. No music.

I took a "riding mower" out there once. To use on what I'd cut earlier ,so no knocking down tall stuff or anything.
Those old furrows ect. were slightly more noticeable. Well , a lot more noticeable.
Didn't break an axle , but quit that riding mower idea going forward.

The cub is not my primary mower...I leave it at one of the farmsteads to mow there instead if hauling a mower once a week. But every so often it comes to the home farm to help with chores or get repair work.
The home farm has too many trees and sheds to mow around...would love to keep it there if I could!

Mows an acre or two a week in an hour. If the zero turn at the home farm or the case 245 at the other farmstead are down I'll haul it and use it there as well.

It is my primary brush cutter when I put the 42" deck on. But the woods 59 is a nice finish mower

I've got a little less than an acre here that I mow with a woods 59. Works well in my opinion. I've also got a 42 but I haven't tried it yet. I do enjoy my time mowing, nice to just tune everything else out and go play on the tractor

I like "riding high" above the few cars that pass me while on a country road for 1/2 mile to our other acre of grass. I feel safer with more visibility and headlights on as well as rear flashing lights and a slow moving vehicle triangle. Yup, love my cub.

I used to mow with a Cub, I certainly agree with the peacefulness of the experience. In those days, thirty years ago, I worked tons of overtime, at my job, and would often be mowing pretty late at night, that was even more peaceful than daytime mowing. Despite making lots of changes, I was never able to get the mowing performance up to my demanding standard. I got the compact diesel bug, bought a Kubota and there is no going back. I've been mowing with the one Kubota for 29 years.
