Oh my...move 'em over!!

Postby Dale Finch » Sat Jul 18, 2020 12:50 pm

Well, in a recent post about the '50 Cub I'm finishing up, this was said when I was worried about having nothing to do when done with it...
ctltmp wrote:Buy another one?? :)

I think you put a whammy on me, & I should be banned from searching Craigslist!!! Yesterday I drove an hour from my place to check out a Cub with a Woods 59 mower...WITH the trailer, of course, JUST IN CASE! :D
2 hours later I was pulling into my farm with my new toy!!

This morning, I unloaded him/her? and started puttering a bit. First the choke rod had come loose at the carb, so a quick fix with a "baby" hitch pin. Then I removed most of the front Universal Mounting Frame, because it restricted the height of the mower.

The seat post is loose...maybe PO tried to use bolts that are too long....task for after my lunch break. Because of the seat post bolt, the PO installed a toolbox using a different bolt location...one of the other rear platform bolts.

It has a new 12v battery, neg ground, with a generator. The seller said the lights didn't work, so I told him it was probably a 6v system, and the bulbs were blown. However, he pointed out that the ammeter does show deflections, and he thought it was charging. Guess someone might have installed a 12v generator? To be determined.

Anyway, THANKS TO ALL YOU ENABLERS!!
Looks like I will have something to keep me busy for a while longer!

How many now?
Check your coil too. If it’s still 6v he probably cooked it with the 12v battery. Paula’s tractor was that way.
I’ve been unlucky/lucky all the great deals my way have been snapped up before I’ve found them or one of my friendly enablers has reached out to me about it. Your included in that group ;)

Did you get the last one running? How did that distributor work out?

You need to tell us a little more about what you drug home. Standard or LoBoy? What year? Any implements other than the mower deck?

The new child (5th) is a running regular '51 F-Cub #140966 with a Woods 59 mower:

S/N

I greeted it this morning with a new fuel cap that I had on the shelf. (I'll send off for a new one later).

New Fuel Cap

The seat post was very loose, and the tool box was installed in the wrong place. I removed the bolts, and installed it further back with the correct bolts. This allowed the toolbox to be installed correctly.
20200718_142653_copy_1008x1792.jpg
Seat bolts replaced with correct ones, installed the toolbox

After some mowing, there was gear oil seeping out the steering shaft seal, so removed the fill plug and cleaned the vent holes out, cleaned the area up, then reinstalled the plug.

Cleaned vented fill plug

Finally, while walking around it, I saw the drawbar mounting bolts were not correct, so replaced 3 of the 4 with the correct tapered 1" bolts (all I had here...others at home).
20200718_154302_copy_1008x567.jpg
Incorrect mounting bolts...should be tapered.

I then added a couple gallons of gas, and proceeded to mow my fields for about 4 hours!!! This Cub was absolutely amazing! Never bogged down, even in some of the thick stuff. I'm VERY happy with it...especially for $900.

After the mowing, I did notice the front seal may be leaking...will check it out. Also, there's a zerk fitting missing on one of the steering tie rod ends. Another thing I need to check is it turns better to the left, than right... aggravated by the fact that the right brake doesn't work. The front axle is one hole out on the right, and all the way in on the left. All of those things will be worked on together...eventually! Meanwhile, it'll get a workout, then some fluid changes. Oh, and I will get out my meter and see if it's charging and what voltage.

I'm happy!!! :D

And yes, I did get the '50 running...distributor worked great after cleaning a some new parts.

Wow, great buy. A running Cub with aworking Woods 59. You didn't buy it you uuuhhh, negotiated a great deal in your favor. I think that's politically correct for stole it. Lol

A lot less tweaking than l'm having to do with my new one.
Congratulations. You'll be catching up to Barnyard quickly at this rate.

Way to go, Dale :{_}:

What a thrill to have it operational, nearly right of the trailer !

Those little 'fiddly' things that are 'easy fixers', are just part of the walk-around and confirm yah did good on the purchase. They're usually followed by scraping grime off, giving it a 'bath', few dips of the brush into the paint can

I really enjoy how you compliment your excellent text with good pictures, too.

Just waiting to hear the name of your 'new' CUB... maybe by your birthday anniversary on July 22nd :D

Happy Birthday !

Don

These "difficult times" are REALLY a big problem...in more ways than one!

You're right. And I have a problem, I only have shed space for 4. May have to just always have one at home to tinker with...or pick one of the last ones to say good bye to. :(

I'm leaning toward keeping this '51, since the '50 needs new finals. But need to bring it out to the farm and drive it around, tally up what each needs, then make a decision.

".......After the mowing, I did notice the front seal may be leaking...will check it out......." I had a front main seal leaking about a pint in 3 hours of running time, decided to try a "stop leak" oil seal product until I can replace the seal. Pleasantly surprised that the leak almost stopped. Only a slight wet spot now.

I don't see how those products work...how does it actually stop a leak? I always picture oil passages (and the like) getting plugged up along with the leak!
