Weld my torque tube or source a used one?

Postby sevy » Sat Aug 29, 2020 3:27 pm

My cub was purchased used by my father 30 years ago, and came with a front end loader attachment. Unfortunately, whoever had owned it previously had overloaded it, and a fist-sized chunk of the bell housing had been broken out, along with the bottom threaded hole. I traded the loader for a plow, and have not needed to use that mounting hole, but the fiberglass/silicone rtv patch my father applied has finally come off.
I have searched the vendors here and locally for a used torque tube, but have not located one. I know that cast iron can be welded, and having split the tractor yesterday to replace the clutch,, I thought this might be a good time to make either a replacement or better repair.
Any advice is appreciated!

PS- You can partially see the broken part in the first picture in the splitting stand post I made yesterday, if that is any help.

I would replace it. There are many good ones cheap. The only problem is shipping or finding one nearby.

Tim (tst) probably can set you up with one. He is close enough to you.

Thank you for the quick replies and offers. I'm still trying to track down something locally, but will abandon the welding idea.

The tractor is 40 miles north of me at my shop. I can take more pictures in a couple of days when I am back up there.
