UPDATE Will a tow behind leaf vacuum work w/59" woods

Postby rick 48 cub » Mon Sep 28, 2020 12:27 pm

:{_}:

My new (ten years old?) tow behind Agri-Fab leaf vacuum/trailer works great with my 59" woods belly mower! If someone sends me your email, I will send u a picture to post here. I did buy a new 6" hose, hose fittings, and special hose clamps that goes around one of the hose ribs. I also blocked off the left side of the mower with heavy sheet metal. I just cut down a whole day of raking to 45minutes of driving my cub around :-)

Do you know what the problem was with your leaf vac?

Mine was designed to chop---NOT suck and the impellers swinging knives would not create suction enough to pull anything up the tube and the 59 dont have force to throw anything up the tube so between the 2 bads,---it wouldnt work!
I had a real vac unit one time on my 147 and that sucker would suck the hoses together! ---it was a real vac and not a shredder type impeller. There is a difference in them as to what type. --- swinging hammermill type impeller dont produce enough vacuum to suck much. Regular vacuum impellers dont chop,---they only suck and thats what you need for use on the 59's.

How many times did you have to empty it in how big an area...just curious. How many times this year do you expect to have to vac leaves?

Good to hear you got it working!

I only used it once so far. About 20% leaf drop over about 1/4 acre. It did fill the bin. I have a chopper/vacuum so the leaf parts compressed well in the trailer.

My pull behind setup had the rear open up, hinged from the side. I could practically do most of my acre of cutting and vacuuming. I can tell you I attached a claw type pitchfork rake to the roof to store the rake. Things were packed in there so tight, you had to pull everything out. Dumping for me was not happening. With my 3 gag setup I was getting on and off the cub several times.

This copied image off the web was very similar to mine. A homemade wood top mounted onto a yard trailer. You could pull the lever to dump, but nothing fell out. You had to physically pull grass and leaves out.

I found another old picture of the baffles I made to bolt onto the deck. You'll also notice the Gator blades. The combination of the baffles, the gator blades, and the pulverizing of material as it passed by the vac impeller probably caused the packing of grass/leaves in the trailer, but boy did it do a thorough job.

Do you use the gator blades with regular mowing (no vac)? Curious to know if i should get a set for mine to mulch up some of the lawn refuse. Maybe I should get the side discharge chute as well...

Once I bought the Gator blades and started using them all the time, I eventually quit using the vac setuo and started mowing the leaves instead. The Gator blades worked perfect for me with regular grass mowing too. Those curved upward teeth bust up any clumps. I probably mowed for 4 years using just the Gator blades. My dad even bought a set for his JD rider. I think Oregon makes them now. They make right and left discharge and also different styles for lift so make sure you buy the correct ones.

Can i get those gator blades to fit a cub with Woods 59 anywhere or do I need to order them at the International dealer? My blades probably have one summer left in them...

Sorry Rick. I haven't lived there in a few years, but you'd be very happy with the results, least I was. I had giant maple trees, raked the leaves out of the flower beds out into the yard and just mowed around a giant circle(discharge towards the center) moving inward each time and by the time I reached the center the leaves were gone.

I bought my blades at a local Toro dealer. They had Oregon books that listed the Woods mower for cub. My neighbor that bought a cub from me ordered his on ebay. Seems like the blades were about +/- $15 ea. at the time back several years ago.

I think the part number for Gator blades for Woods 59C-2 is 90-986, however they may be discontinued.
