What planter is this?

Just bought cub with fertilizer and planter. The number on galvanized bucket is PO1821A, the hopper bottom is 8999C but the part attached to it is 8699. Anyone know what planter this is and which seed plate we need to plant purple hull peas? Can we even use this hopper bottom to plant peas. (I have printed several manuals and read them but no answers so far.) Thanks for any help.

I could be wrong but don't the fertilizer buckets have little to do with the planter? Like can't you mix and match them? I could be wrong as I am no expert here.

Sorry for confusion; there are 2 galvanized hoppers (guess that is correct name) one is planter and the other is for fertilize. The planter bucket has the PO1821A on it with hopper bottom #899C. I am totally confused. Cannot find any reference to hopper Or hopper bottoms. Will attempt pic. Thanks for responses.

Lettie is talking about a seed hopper, not fertilizer. But you are right any of several different hoppers were supplied with any planter. PO1821A is the bottom plate of the Single Seed hopper. Among Cub planters, it was probably most common on the Cub-171 blackland planter. But it also showed up on the Cub-172 runner planter. There were different sets of bottom parts for that hopper, Of the other 2 part numbers listed in the original post, one is part of a cotton unit the other part of the corn unit. So without pictures, not much more can be added.

Parts listing for the hopper can be found in Cub Implement Catalog CBI-1 in the "Common Units" section. The Cub-171 and Cub-172 planters are also in that catalog.

Lettie- The manual in the link above will be very helpful to you. Note that it is an older version of the version on the manual server of this site. There is quite a bit more information on the single seed hopper in the earlier one. Page 16-17 list the seed plates by number, application and their hole size and spacing. Page 54-55 will show you the corn and cotton specific parts. Page 75 shows yet another bottom and plates for small seeds. There are some plates for peas listed on page 54-55. I have yet to find any in my part of the country. McFarlanes in Sioux City, WI has some NOS blank plates such as 7937 that can be drilled to whatever you want. I did this to a blank plate I could not find, using the book for a reference on hole size and spacing. I can scan a copy of my 47 planter manual if you would like it in a single PDF file.

The single PDF copy of the 171 and 172 manuals is available on this site. Down on the bottom right of the page (on my phone at least) below the related threads there is a drop down box that says "jump to" select pdf manuals there. I think then you choose cub manuals then like cub attachments and you will get to the manual. Maybe it is different than the one Sad has I am not sure. I can't remember the year it says it is. I have it saved on my phone. I need to print it out so that I can refer to it and not have to keep scrolling back or forward.

If I remember correctly the one on the manual server is a 1952. The single seed hopper is ignored for the most part, and I do not think the optional bottoms are shown. I am no expert on this subject, I just remember when I bought a bunch of planter pieces I had a hard time identifying what I had with the '52 manual. The '47 manual in the link above listed all of my parts which turned out to be a small seed and peanut equipment package. I was told by someone IH discontinued some of the equipment for the single seed hopper later on. I do not know how factual that is, but its absence from the later manual does support that theory.

I have spent the last year collecting parts to set a cub up for gardening. I have a single seed hopper, a poax hopper, and a combination hopper. The single seed hopper seems to be the least prevalent hopper that was available for use on a cub and the combination hopper the most prevalent. If you plan to plant more than just peas at some point in time I would suggest trying to find a different seed hopper. A combination or richmond hopper is the easiest to find plates for. New plates are still available From Lincoln ag products for both of these hoppers. Used plates are readily available on eBay. The lustran plastic plates can be modified to work for most any seed and spacing. I would recommend the combination hopper over the richmond hopper because the hopper drive is a much simpler design with fewer parts. Burch Store Tractor in Burlington NC has a tremendous amount of planter plates and parts and may very well have plates for your single seed hopper if you want to stick with that hopper.
