Charging Issues

Postby nwfan1 » Sat Oct 17, 2020 3:34 pm

Here's what I have:

- Late '54 standard Cub with battery ignition
- Ammeter shows small discharge when running
Following the troubleshooting flowchart:
- with tractor off polarized gen
- start tractor, no charge
- connect regulator to good ground, no charge
- connect gen to bat, shows charge

Here's where it gets interesting:
- remove gen to bat connection, continues to charge normally
- shut engine down
- restart engine, ammeter shows small discharge until I jump gen and bat again

If it is a voltage regulator issue, is it normal to continue charging once the gen to bat connection is removed, and then not work after engine is shut off and restarted?

I've repeated this cycle about 5 times with the same result.
Swapped voltage regulator and have the same result.

Thanks.

How fast are you idling the engine while you do these experiments?
What voltage are you reading at GEN before you jump GEN to BAT?
