Re: Voltage regulator
A regulator not allowing battery charge can see your battery too low in capacity to crank.
Charging the battery , or testing it; will tell if it is ready to crank.
If it's not your battery , it's not likely the voltage regulator.
You mention starting. Does that mean your engine is cranking but does not fire?
That puts you in the ignition system area. Vs. regulator/charging system.

Re: Voltage regulator
If it came factory with a regulator (mounted on side of engine rather than on top of generator), yes, but rarely happens. On those models the L lead from the regulator provided power for lights, ignition, etc. A bad connection on that lead on the bottom of the regulator can prevent spark, but lights will also be out. If it has a key start, may also prevent cranking, but not if pull rod start, unless battery has run down.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

No. But your battery won't charge. Just teplaced our voltage regulator last week. I've never seen a charging needle as far to the right!
Not a mechanic but enjoying seat time with my son.
