Farmall Cub

I was looking at my pan as I was cleaning it , seeing how much I may have to straighten around the holes. I was thinking it looked pretty straight. Then I flipped it and started to clean the outside of it. And noticed the edge had reinforcing flat stock weld all around the outer lip. Pretty cool modification I thought. They must have had trouble with deformed pan lips, or this was just standard mod from the guy that rebuilt it in the 60s or 70s for my grand dad?

that is a factory pan, they upgrades to that in the 50"s

Oh cool. I thought it looked really quality. So how come so many people have distorted pans. If this was done in the 50s seems like more would be this way that not?

Below is a page from the Cub parts manual, it tells the different lengths of the oil pan bolts needed with the 2 different oil pans, and the engine serial number when they changed.

I was missing I thought only one bolt up front. I chased the threads with a tap they were there so I put a bolt back into it when I reassembled from a different spot. I figured I would have to go buy the correct length (half the time I never have the right one on hand). When I got all the bolts in I had I now had 2 empty holes...I thought I only was missing one bolt when I started? I don't remember so oh well. I was missing a few lock washers so I went to the bolt bin and got the washers and even had 2 bolts to fit the empty spots! Sure they have a shiney head but I'm not really a purist, I just want it functional.

If you study the production numbers, you will see that approximately 1/2 (or slightly more) of the Cubs were built from 1947-1949. So modifications made after that affected only a small portion of Cubs produced.

Wow I hadn't looked that close. I did notice the early years they made way more than the later. Which makes sense why you see so many people talking about distorted pans.

Would it work to stiffen up the oil pan lip if you took a piece of strap iron 1/8 inch thick by 5/8 inch wide ,cut it to lengths 4 pieces . Drill the holes to match the pan. Bolt it up,it should stiffen up the mounting surface. Just a thought.

You could spot weld the straps to hold them in place for easier installation (I think that's what IH originally did).
