Engine block serial stamp

Postby Lt.Mike » Wed Mar 03, 2021 4:15 pm

This question came up somewhere else and I didn’t have an answer.
If the are above and forward of the distributor is stamped “FCUBM 48110” The numbers would suggest a 1948 Tractor but what does the “M” denote?

Seems as if all the different farmalls I have looked at (which is only a small handful) has a M in the engine serial number.

I could be wrong but from what little I have saw it looks like the older stuff had the tractor model in the engine serial number too.

The 48 C I have is FCM
The combine engine in my 48 is 1MCUBM

It looks like my 68 cub has a M prefix in the engine serial #, but is too dirty to see anything else.

I will have to look at my super A and BN and see what they have some day.

I wonder if the F in the FCM stands for Farmall! ???

Looked at my BN and Super A today and the bn engine has the exact fabn followed by the serial number just like the tractor serial number, it is a 1946. (No M prefix)

The super A has the FAAM prefix on the engine serial number, it is a 1953.
