Trying to find a valve spring tool to order

Postby jasonb01 » Mon Mar 15, 2021 2:46 pm

I have read a lot about the old KD 700's but they're pretty expensive on ebay and it's not something I'll use much. Does anyone have this one on amazon? Just wondering if it'll work good on a cub. If there's another one you know for sure works good without much hassle, please link it. Thanks!!

One similar to the above link works better. And you can use it on larger engines.

To use it on a Cub engine you just need a small block of 2x4 wood on the top of the block to compress the springs.

Edit: I have several spring compressors including the one cited by the original poster.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Thanks Eugene, I'll look for one like that style.

This one at NAPA looks very similar. Do you feel this one would get the job done? I'd rather just get it at NAPA anyway.

If you get one of the larger c-clamp style like the jegs or napa, check the end that goes on the valve spring seat (washer). It can be a real nuisance if it doesn't adjust down to the small size of the Cub part.

Here is a home brewed one that works well on a Cub. This was made by Ed (ScottyD'sdad) and he has more details.

I have the larger "C" style spring compressor, it works on the C-60 but it's cumbersome. I'm pretty sure that someone makes a smaller version of it but have no info, right off the top of my head. I keep looking out, for one, at flea markets and swap meets, no luck yet.
The vise grip based unit, that Ed made, looks pretty slick but I don't have an extra quick clamp that I'm willing to sacrifice, at the moment. Maybe I'll pick up a cheap, damaged one and give it a try.
I do have one of the Briggs & Stratton type (a little different from the one on the Amazon link), it don't work well on the C-60. The tool occupies the space where your fingers need to work.

I just took a quick look at Ebay, there are several listed, Wilde and Lisle as well as several others in the $23 range. I might just grab one of the Wilde 600's to check it out. The price is pretty reasonable, if it works. I searched "small engine valve spring compressor"

Gary, mine is made from a cheap, Harbor Freight welding clamp, I think it was 5 bucks, at the time. Hardest part would be to find the tip, that fits the valve spring. Mine came from a broken, big "C"clamp type compressor.

I ended up buying the Wilde 600 on Ebay. Used it today. It worked great. I did have to change it to the smaller attachment that was included with it. Thanks for the recommendation!

I can't for the life of me figure out how to post a picture on here so here's a link to the tool being used on my cub.

I'm glad that worked out for you! That looks like a good tool for the casual user. If you did that work every day, you might spend the money for a faster tool but most of us don't get into these that often.

I got the tool the OP was asking about. Turns out it doesn't work out of the box. Compressing the spring as much as possible does not reveal the retainers enough. Standing on the shoulders of greatness, I got the idea to use it and the vise grip tool and make it work.

I had a very hard time with these tools and ended up with k&D 607 keep tool and the reverse pliers style spring compressor
