Rotten hose and rusty leaky radiator outlet nipple.

Postby tarawa » Tue Mar 16, 2021 7:41 pm

My Cub has been sitting now for over a year waiting to be put back together after I repaired a valve seat and replaced valves and guides. I also decided to replace pistons and rings. My brother is down from Pa for a week and we decided to get this thing back together. After everything was back together and we were filling the (new) radiator, water started dripping from radiator outlet hose nipple. It looks totally rusted out. Any tips on changing this nipple out? Of course I will Have to change out the hose too. I think I lost all coolant today through the leak.

Are you talking about the hose connection to the bolster or the connection to the lower right side of the block below the steering? If the metal is rusted out to the point of leaking coolant then probably will have to be replaced, or you could clean the metal parts as well as possible, coat it with a rust inhibitor like OSPHO, and apply a coat of metal mender like JBWELD. New hose is available at auto parts store, I think it's 1 1/2 inches diameter. It's a no pressure system so it shouldn't be too hard to stop the leaks. Good luck.

Yes it is the piece of pipe nipple near the steering. I will ( hopefully) remove it in the morning and refill the radiator.

That nipple might be a bugger to remove but once you do, just pick up a pipe nipple at the hardware and cut it to the proper length. Install it with thread sealant.

My brother removed the old one in about 20 minutes. He used my 5x pneumatic rivet gun th fold it up. I got a stainless nipple and cut it to size. No leaks now.
