2nd gear has broken tooth

Postby fiddler » Mon Apr 12, 2021 2:59 am

So I need to change the 2nd gear on my 1948 cub transmission. Is there anyway to do that from the back and top or do I need to split the tractor? (Just so I know what I am getting into.... ) Thanks for your input.

You will have to split tractor at the rear transmission. There are instructions for this in the service manual.

Also count the number of teeth on your gear and any replacement you get. ?The later ones had a different second gear ratio, and both the drive and driven gear have to be changed in pairs if changing ratios.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Hi,
Below is the Cub and LoBoy service manual, it has lots of info.
There is a contents beginning on page 1 of most sections, that makes it easier to use online.
The pics are probably easier to see on a computer with a larger screen than a phone has.

You didn't say if it is the upper or lower gear that is broken.

The clutch shaft comes out the front of the transmission after splitting the Cub in front of the trans. :)

I just did the 2-3 input gear on mine. Not a bad job but as said you need to split the tractor in front of the transmission.

In my case I had a leaking axle seal so I pulled off the rear wheels and the finals before removing splitting the transmission off the torque tube. Most of the time went into pulling the finals. Should be a pretty quick job if you're just replacing the input gear.
