1958 Cub Loboy oil leak

I have very good running and looking 1958 Loboy that leaks oil out of the inspection cover after shutting off the engine. It doesn't appear to happen while running. Sometimes it is a little, other times more. The tractor obviously had some restoration done to it by a previous owner but I have do idea to what extent or what was done. Any chance this could be a common issue and a simple fix?

Nice looking 58! I have the early 58 style Loboy. (Looks like a 57)

Is the leak coming out of the crescent shaped flywheel cover or the round clutch cover? Does it appear to be engine oil or gear oil?

Actually, the leaking is taking place while running. The spinning of the flywheel and clutch keep the oil distributed around the inside of the bell housing and it them drips out after shutdown. You need to determine if it's motor oil or transmission oil. If it's trans oil, the transmission may just be overfull from condensation. If you determine that it's motor oil, it's most likely a leaking rear main seal. Both issues are very common, if it's an over full trans, you need to drain it and refill with the proper amount of gear oil. The rear main seal will involve splitting the tractor for replacement.

Remove the hand hole cover.

Use a light and a mirror to look towards the transmission.

If the rear part of the torque tube is dry, then you will know where the problem is.......... Rear main seal! :(

It appears to be engine oil. I don't have enough knowledge of replacing the rear main, so it may be an expensive fix.

Are you close enough to the Bash that you could bring it there and have help replacing the rear seal?

Buy the seal and and any associated parts and bring it to the Bash. We can make it a project.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Hi,
On some of the Cubs, the rear oil seal for the engine made nowadays doesn't fit right in the rear seal retainer.
The seal is too loose in the retainer.
I'm not sure if the LoBoys had the same problem, the first LoBoys were made in 1955.
tst, a member on here, machines used retainers so a slightly bigger oil seal fits snug in them.
He may have an ad for them in The Vine section of this website.

Or you can buy a new oil seal for the LoBoy, and try it in the retainer you have when the LoBoy is split.
The seal should fit snug, and have to be hammered in.
TM Tractor at the bottom of the page has new oil seals.
Below is a pic from TM Tractor of the rear seal retainer.

There is supposed to be an oil drain hole at the bottom front of the clutch housing, ahead of the hand hole. It may be plugged with dirt if the oil runs out the hand hole.

You could use a screwdriver and open the hole if you want.

Below is a pic from TM Tractor of the bottom of the clutch housing, the hole is at the left end in the pic. :)
