1953 Cub mower deck bearings

Postby DanB » Wed Jun 23, 2021 9:54 am

The mower deck has 3 blades. The bearings went south on the center blade, and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get them out. I see no circlips. On one end there's some sort of steel retainer with 3 holes in it. I'm not sure if it just presses apar, or if that part with 3 little holes is threaded in there and requires some special wrench. This has been driving me nuts for almost two days now ! The field needs to be mowed!

hard to tell from your pics but the part with the holes may be a nut to set the load on the bearings, made for a spanner wrench to turn them, you can try using a punch to see if it turns it

Could be snap rings under the seal in the first picture

The holes in the second picture could have been drilled to let excess grease out instead of pushing the seal out

So far, Paul and Ringo have arrived. John and George were supposed to follow ages ago, but apparently have gone awol. Long story.

Which mower is this that you are talking about? Woods 59 or something else? Have you found parts drawings? We have a bunch here on this site which you should be able to get to after you make another post or two. In the upper left corner under quick links. Also, parts suppliers like Messicks have a good library of parts drawings available on line.

Looks like a Pennington spindle assembly. Schematics and information are scarce at best

Thank You for comments/advice. I think I got this now. A few hours to figure out how it was all put together. Nice to have a good press and a torch ~ I got it apart. With luck tomorrow I find new bearings and get it back together. It's amazing to me sometimes how the simplest small part can take so much time.

And to comment on another reply ~ nowhere online could I find detail about this part. (Maybe I should make my own youtube video about it LOL)

Dan, What was required to disassemble it? How did you do it?
