New Radiator

Yesterday a big box turned up thanks to Bob McCarty. Thanks Bob
Inside was a new Clancy Radiator.
I cracked the box open and offered it to the bolster.
I then sat the radiator support brackets in place.
This is when it all turned to muck it seems.
The radiator support brackets were hitting the top tank and would not wrap around the radiator.
I then put the old IH radiator in the same place and all seems good.
Measuring the old to the new , I found the Clancy item was about ½” shorter.
This being the reason the side brackets won’t fit.
Also , when sitting on the bolster , the Clancy angles back and hits the fan ??
Has anyone else come across this ? I’ve read great things about the Clancy radiator.
Did I just get a dud ?

Paul, you mentioned a bulge in the front of the bolster. Could that account for the backwards tip with the Clancy? The bottom of the old radiator matches the bulge while the Clancy sits on top of it?

Hiya Bob , I did thank of that. Its possible. I'll check the angle of both on a flat surface later on tonight.
But there is still the problem of it being 1/2" shorter and fouling the side brackets
Not sure how that will be overcome.

No, there was not.

I just put the Clancy on a flat surface and it's definitely leaning towards the back
The gap between the top surface of the bottom plate and the bottom lip of the top tank is 342 on the rear and 345 on the front.
Top to bottom on the side plates is approx 343. (Measured with a tape measure)
I can probably notch the top of the side supports , but not sure if the radiator can be "forced" to the right angle?
What do you think
At best the side plates may just fit , but I don't know how others are saying it all fitted up withno dramas
I'll add some photos in the morning

Sounds like you ended up with a "dud". That's a shame, too, because I installed 2 with absolutely no problems.

When I rolled my cub over the radiator and brackets and radiator were bent to the side about 3 inches. I disconnected the radiator at the bracket then put a come along on the bracket and made it straight then I pulled the radiator over and it never broke the seal. it will move but I’d hate to have to do that with a brand new one.

My neighbor had to put a new on on one of his cubs, but he got one from Stiener and it fit o.k. ---- dont know who makes their products.

I'd have to agree with this. I installed one a year or two ago and it fit fine. Hopefully you can get it figured out!

Have installed 2 Clancy rads. First one on a 68 4 years ago. Fit like a glove. Second one, a month ago on my 55. Rad was straight front to back but one rad side rail wouldn’t fit under tank edge. Had to take a 1/16” off the top of the support. Hope their quality control isn’t slipping.

Just throwing out an idea without thinking it through.

If you need to "make it fit", you might want to consider making a spacer to fit between the radiator and the housing. Depending on what you make it of, you might be able to make it into enough of a wedge without too much effort.

I'm sorry to hear of your trouble. I know you probably wouldn't want to risk it, but could you bolt it all up to the bolster and then using a strap running around the back/top of the radiator, pull the top forward to straighten it up? From your measurements, it looks like you're only 3mm off, which is approx. 0.11" (not very much). That would solve your fan hitting the radiator and side bracket issues. As for the overall height being 1/2" less than it should, I'd consider a machine shop or metal shop where you could get them to cut a 3/8" (9.5mm) to 1/2" (12.7mm) thick piece of aluminum and either you or they could cut/drill out the radiator pattern. Aluminum is easy to work with. When installing, you'd have to use two gaskets, one on each side of the aluminum spacer and plenty of sealant to prevent leaks. Then, you'd have the right height.

re the height of the radiator ....don't the side brackets sit on top of the radiator base ?
Wont a spacer just move the whole problem up ?
