Touch Control doesn't work

Postby Bill Hudson » Tue Aug 24, 2021 11:43 am

The hydraulic lift doesn't work and I need some guidance. Yes, I can and have rebuilt/refurbed both the hydraulic pump and TC before, but I'm in a time crunch and want to avoid that, if possible. Here is what I experienced when I tried to use the hydraulics:
- the rockshaft moved a little, by hand pressure, when hooking up the 54 blade
- started the Cub and the rockshaft didn't respond to the control lever
- the control lever moved easily throughout the full cycle range
- no unusual sounds from the hydraulic pump or TC
- no evidence of engine RPM change when moving the control lever
- tried the easy fix by topping of the TC, took very little oil - no change in operation

What are the chances that the nut, lock washer, and gear from the hydraulic pump are in the oil pan? I've got everything I need to remove the pump and replace those things and leave the others in the pan for now.

Any and all answers/suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.

Bill

Easy fix, Bill, if that's the issue. I'd pull the pump and check.

Being able to move the rockshaft by hand, even a little, suggests air in the system. So the first thing I would try is clearing any air from the system by removing the fill plug and with the engine running try repeatedly cycling the system from one extreme to the other. Give it a little time to react each time you move the lever. You know that drill.

The next thing I would try is removing and cleaning the orifice and orifice screen. Access is through the pipe plug in the Touch Control head. You know that drill too. I think a bit of material plugging it is more likely than the gear falling off the pump.

Did you check the fluid level?

I try to be as informative as possible when asking a question. It helps those responding if that have all the facts and saves a bunch of time.

Oh, I’m setting in front of the fan cooling off before I move a Cub or two so that I can it in the Cubhouse to work on it.

You might try taking the top Allen plug out on the block at the TC unit and start the tractor or maybe just spin it over with the starter and see if it blows oil out in your face. One caution, that plug is tight.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I just topped the TC fluid off a few days ago on a somewhat new to me cub which got the TC working....yesterday nothing worked.
After checking motor oil for increased level and checking that the TC fluid was still full I ran the engine to WOT and the TC started working normally again even when throttled down to an idle. I do believe there is more going on and the problem will possibly return, until then....it works.
Good luck, hopefully its an easy fix on yours.

Maybe you had an air lock and the increased RPMs burped it out?

Clemsonfor,
Possibly so, I thought the same thing. I can't really see any other reason it would all work normally now unless there was air trapped somewhere that needed burping. Good luck on your repair.
