differential shaft
The differential shaft of my cub pushes out by hand once the brake drum is removed. Is this normal or is there some problem with the bearing?

Re: differential shaft
Hi,
I'm not sure what you meant.
The ball bearing is supposed to be tight on the upper shaft.
The ball bearing should have a snap ring on it's OD. The cap held on with 4 bolts holds the snap ring in position, so the shaft doesn't move out of the final drive.
Remove the cover, and the shaft slides out through the hole, the shaft would be going out away from the transmission housing.
The brake drum, and brake drum key have to be removed for the shaft to go through the oil seal.
Below are pages from the Cub parts manual, the bearing and snap ring are number 5 in the pic.
It shows number 5 is the bearing, and the snap ring, 2 different parts, but doesn't mention the snap ring in the description.
It also shows number 4 in the pic is a lock ring.

Re: differential shaft
with the brake drum removed the shaft with all associated spacers, bearings, etc will slide out of the housing to the outside with the cap removed. The bearing is not tight in the housing, do not need to tap it.

Re: differential shaft
the bearing is not a press fit, just a little snug, the cap holds it in place
