I-H 60 inch Mower

Postby 69ranger » Thu Nov 11, 2021 12:54 pm

Hello,

So this recent Cub that I bought has a 3 blade, 60 inch mower that has an I-H tag on it, so I guess they were actually made by I-H?

I dont plan to use this, since I have a Woods L-59 on my A, and its a pretty heavy load. Wondering a couple things?
Are these pretty good mowers, and is there any market for them? Also they seem really big for a Cub.. Has any one used one, and if so how do they work with only 9 horse power?

I have a cub with a woods 42 on it and I really like it. That seems like a better fit? Am I wrong?

Thanks guys for your thoughts.

Some like 59 / 60" deck on a cub, some hate them!

The woods 42 is a mini brush hog!

If you have a STRONG running cub, the 59 works fine. If the cub power plant is getting the least bit tired, it is not so fine. I mowed with a late model cub for years with one, finally had to rebuild it.

Hi,
Below is the IH C-3 Mower operator's manual, it has lots of info. The manual is from 1963.
I don't know if this is the model you have, the model should be on the ID plate.

http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... index.html

The manuals for older IH mowers say they were Danco mowers, the manual above doesn't mention Danco, that I saw. :)

I think Glen is correct and you have a 3 spindle IH c-3 finish mower.

I personally think the wood 42 or the IH c-2 are great mowers for the cub. The 3 spindle finish mowers are lawnmowers and unless you are completely on schedule with cutting the lawn every week you end up getting in trouble. If you have lawn and pasture and fields you cut once or twice a year the 42 and c-2 are far better options able serve different needs.

The finish mowers do one thing and are better at cutting a neat lawn than the 42 and C-2. You just are risking disappointment by asking it to do more.

Thank you all. Glen thank you for the Manual link. Yes that is the mower on the latest cub.
I am not sure what I will do with this mower, but I am pretty sure I will take it off, and try to sell it off, to some one, if I can find an interested person.

Yes I like the 42 Woods, on my cub better for most things.. The L 59 Woods and the A was my mower for several years until I got a Zero turn, and now I hardly use it. It mows about as good as the zero turn, just not as fast. My only problem with it was that I could not use it during the wet season, as it left too many marks. Mostly that was why I got a Zero turn.

The 42 mower does pretty nice work for a Brush Hog style mower.
I have mowed some pretty tough grass with it, when I had to. I bought a house on a little over an acre of land that was grown up pretty bad, and used the 42 and the Cub to clean it up.
The first pass left the mower up as far as I could. After I made a pass, then I took a half swath at a time to avoid over working the belt and tractor.
Raked up the left over grass, with a horse drawn hay rake, and burned it. After that the lawn mower took over from there on.
I use the 42 all the time in the summer to mow the stuff that dont have to be like a lawn. I would hate to be with out it.

I mow our waterway with my 47 Cub and a C-3 mower. I usually mow once a week; not that the grass is so tall, but I get to be out on the Cub. In the Spring the grass grows at a fast rate and is usually 6" tall at mowing time. The Cub cuts it just fine in 2nd. There have been times with the grass is 10+" tall and 1st gear is necessary. Keep the deck clean and the blades sharp and the C-3 works great. Best therapy I've found.

I was thinking this same thing. You have to use it like a finish mower and your only clipping a few inches off turf grasses. A ymore and your going to be bogging down. I have. I have never used one but having mowed with other mowers and oversize implements with an underpowered tractor. In anything but the best conditions it doesn't work that well.

I have a Woods 42 mounted under a standard Cub and a 3260 (60" deck) mounted under a 154. The 154 handles the 60" deck.

Both are used to keep about 4 or 5 acres trimmed. Neither is good for mowing pasture.

There is a market for your deck. I definitely wouldn't place it in the scrap pile.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I had several that had the IH tag on them---mower was ok but cubs wouldnt pull them! Have a woods 59 on a 185 lo-boy and it only pulls it cause it has the creeper box in it. Also have the 42's,---again the cubs wont handle them for serious bush hoggin. They will cut grass IF you mow every day, which I dont have time to do, so in general NONE of these mowers are of much use on cubs.
I have a woods 59 on an A tractor and it struggles with it but if you only take a half cut it does ok.
The major problem with these old tractors is that the ground speed is WAY too fast in first gear to work.
I also use a woods C-80 on a IH 340 and it works fine ---- 340 has 5-speeds plus ta so you have 10 gears total, 8 up and 2 back, PLUS live pto which is the greatest thing on earth!

This grass was a little wet woods 42 1975 cub (pre last HP bump). The cub has to be in good tune and the blade sharp but I go into deep stuff with them. I will note I have a governor out of the number cub in this cub but I can do the same with my cubs set up with an 1800-2000 RPM governor.

Wow, I must be extremely fortunate. I have been using a C3 mower for about 25 years to cut 6 acres. Sometimes I wait about a month between mowing. Yes, if the tractor is tired it will be an issue, but so far I have had no problems. These pics are from the first cut of the season done on May 23rd of this year. Granted, there are grass clumps, but that is to be expected.

Keeping the blades reasonably sharp can make a big difference.

C# is a good heavy duty mower, I do like to run a 6.5 " PTO pulley that is used with the woods, they do not struggle at all with that instead of the 8" it came with
