Toggle brake bands with glued linings?
I recently purchased a set of brake bands (NOS??) online, and was surprised to find they had no rivets. There is a sticker on one that describes it. The metal band, itself, DOES have the rivet holes.
I looked back at the ad, and saw that one of the 2 sets offered DID have rivets, and could see that the other set (mine) did not... I had not noticed this when I bought them.
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1299036533894228/
So my question is do you think these will perform and last as well as the riveted pair? Or should I contact the seller and try to swap for the riveted set?
And what is your opinion of the lining material, itself? Different from other ones I've seen & used.
Thanks!

I'd rather have riveted, I don't trust glue.

Automotive brake bands haven't been riveted for years, so I don't think you'll have an issue.

Re: Toggle brake bands with glued linings?
Like has been already stated glue has been used for years even on motorcycles. Have had glued ones on the 8N for a long time. Differences in linings could be from migration away from asbestos with different materials being used. Added advantage of glue is if your not paying attention the linings can wear down and the rivets gouge the brake drum.

It's not like a Cub has to stop 5,000 pounds. I see no problem with glued linings.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Toggle brake bands with glued linings?
I think either one will work fine. I have not seen a riveted set on cars or trucks for years. And I’ve never had a glued set come loose whether it was a pad for disc brakes or a shoe for drum brakes. Run what you have, don’t bother exchanging. Whoever restores the tractor again 70 years from now can replace them with whatever they like or can find at that time.

OK, thanks! As you have pointed out, we are not zooming around! Plus, anyone familiar with cubs KNOWS the brake are always suspect anyway, so you try to anticipate stopping, or avoid this steep up/downhills!
They're just going "on the shelf", and hopefully I will never need to use them!

Thats funny since just a week or so ago, my cub towed a hay wagon with about 110 bales on it down the road.
Probably around 6000# if you include the weight of the wagon!
Thats like a regular thing around here!
Keep on tractoring!

I would use them. I don't see a problem.Dale Finch wrote:They're just going "on the shelf", and hopefully I will never need to use them!
Wouldn't try that in the Ozark hills. Cub will pull much more than it's brakes can stop on any significant slope or ground speed.SamsFarm wrote:Thats funny since just a week or so ago, my cub towed a hay wagon with about 110 bales on it down the road.Barnyard wrote:It's not like a Cub has to stop 5,000 pounds. I'm talking about stopping. You are talking about pulling. Two entirely different things. With that much weight you are taking risks.

Pulling and stopping kinda go hand in hand.
Not much for grade on my road travels.
And you all know that Cub is no speed demon.
Life is a risk! No?

Growing up dad had 2 tractors, one was a 140 and we would get hay on the trailer across the creek with it pulling the trailer cause the other one was hooked to the baler. Don't know how many bales but it was a bunch. Whoever was driving it (me or my brother) dad would tell us "when you get to the creek and start up the hill don't stop until you get to the top" it would spin all the way up. Thank God we never got hurt but we did a bunch of other stupid stuff as kids too

Re: Toggle brake bands with glued linings?
Just because it will do it, don't mean you should. I would opt for a larger tractor or even better a truck with modern brakes, and more weight if it were me.

Re: Toggle brake bands with glued linings?
I worked part time in an auto parts store while going to college in the late 60s, and glued (or bonded) brake bands were common then. Old timers didn't trust them, younger people liked them because they had a longer life due to not having rivet heads sticking up.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: Toggle brake bands with glued linings?
Results are overwhelmingly keep em! So the next tractor (that has toggle brakes!) that needs them, gets them! I thought it was a good price at $20+shipping of $13 for the pair.
He still shows the 2nd pair on his Facebook Marketplace ad.
