Cub Engine Swap

Postby Kyle Delong » Thu Feb 17, 2022 6:30 pm

Hi all, I'm starting to see more and more of diesel swapped cubs. I was wondering is this possible with out any major modifications? What diesel engines would work best? Any info would be appreciated.

Ive seen a few, and they required a lot of machine shop time.

you need a cradle to replace the structure the engine block gives the tractor.

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

It depends on what you mean by major mods. Some folks can’t change a spark plug while others build space stations. There’s a good bit that has to be considered, the cradle, as mentioned above is just one of them. The clutch and flywheel were some of my biggest hurdles on Cubota. Figuring out a starter was a head scratcher. The best engine to use is the one you can find and afford to buy. I’m most familiar with Kubotas and think the ideal models are D-850, D-905 and D-950. These are older engines that are less complicated and also less expensive. On Cubota, I used a V-800, the others would have been a better choice as the V-800 is a stationary engine designed to run 3600 rpm constantly, the others max out at 3000 or lower. Other brands will work too, but I can’t make any recommendations on those.
