Low hour cubs
Has anyone seen or own a low hour cub?
There was a post on Facebook recently of a guy and his cub.
I think it was maybe a '55 model and he claimed it was basically new.
He bought it off the proverbial old lady

Re: Low hour cubs
What would "low hour" even mean?
With a 67 year old tractor, a 50 hour-per-year tractor would still be rebuild ready at 3350 hours.
Guess it wasn't a mowing tractor.

There is just no way to confirm that. You can look it over and see if a lot of wrenching was done to it and check the compression but everything would be a guess.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Yea but look at the other side. If bought from an old lady, her husband could of died two decades prior and the tractor sat up in the shed 10 years before that when he got to weak, sick or did something different, so it's likely that even though it was a mowing tractor 40 years ago it hasn't mowed one square foot maybe in 30-40 years? Iknow for a fact 100% that the cub I have and been playing with the last year hadn't really done anything but been cranked a few times and maybe run around the yard in the last 20+ years! Iknow that case a cousin got it after my granddad died. It had probably been close to 10 years before that that the tractor had been run.

Re: Low hour cubs
Not a Cub, but farmall51 on YouTube owns a ridiculously clean and tight 140. The condition of the universal mounting frames, front end, and other wearing points all point to very low hours. The "creampuffs" are out there, you just gotta find em.

Re: Low hour cubs
In this era, it is not hard to buy a few (extra) tractors and (then) time slips away from you.
I know from experience!
I got a 53 super A, a 40 something BN, and two 1948 Cubs that have been taking up space.
As far as use goes, I have not really used them in 15 years. Getting to be close to 20 years that I owned them!

Re: Low hour cubs
I found this 1975 Cub that was all original, quietest, tightest one I’ve ever been on or owned. Transmission had very little noise. Wound up selling it cause I didn’t need it.
Bought this 140 from a friend, it’s tight and quiet as well.

Re: Low hour cubs
Again not a cub, but a very low hour 140, that I believe is a 1970 model. Dad bought this super nice, low hour 140 back in about 1991 or 92.
This tractor was well known in the area, and had supposedly been bought new by a local town, along with 3 others, to mow with.
My Uncle knew the history of this tractor, and from what I can remember these 140's were used to mow parks, and city property, including a small air port.
He said the city bought 4 of them, and put woods mowers on 3 of them. There was some speculation that this one may have been used to more plains at the air port.
Not sure what happened to the others, or why this one was not used very much. The city sold this one at a surplus, auction, probably in the last 80's and a local truck farmer bought it.
He used it some, but a whole lot, and then died suddenly. The widow of the guy sold the 140, and a lot of other things at an auction, and Dad bought it.
There were, and are still corks, painted I-H red in most of the mounting holes, and while slightly faded, the paint was really nice.
There is a number 3 on the side of the grill shell, that would seem to lend some truth to the story of 4 tractors.
It has the square front axle, with a brace, and also a foot feed for the throttle.
Dad put a woods L-59 mower on it and it was used, until he no longer had the health to do so, about 6 years ago.
Its still in his shed, and even though there have been some hours added to it, its still a nice old tractor, and has been well maintained.
I think it has been kept inside almost all of its life.

What he’s claiming about what you can see and verify may be true. What cannot be verified is a separate matter.
But it’s a common selling technique to claim, “Owned by a little old lady who only drove it to church on Sunday.” In other words, making the buyer feel they’re getting something more.

This was the cub I saw. As mentioned , no proof to what the guy claimed

It's probably 100% real. The tires on it are original with very little wear. The tractor is in nearby Rhode Island.

Wouldn't there be some paint fading even if the Cub had been under cover from the start?

Re: Low hour cubs
Pretty good looking Cub. I don't see any hints of being non-original, other than the two pins in the Fast-Hitch.
