Will it damage the alternator to run it w/o being hooked up to the battery?? Will probably be replacing it with a new one wire eventually anyway but would use it for a while!

3-wire or 1-wire alternators - - generally no damage using the alternator as a fan belt tightner if not connected to the battery. The alternator requires a tiny bit of battery voltage to excite them.

No wires\ connected! just floating! Want to keep the belt out of the fan IF I do get it to start?
