20 over piston rings cub

Postby pett3227b » Mon Jun 06, 2022 10:14 am

Does anyone know where to get a Set of rings for the Cub motor that are 20 over bore? I puchased a set from hastings and I have broken them. My machinist has told me that hastings rings are usually not made to the proper specs. Is there another company I can use? It wasn't there fault that I broke them just am looking for a better replacement. Thank-you

Hastings makes the best rings I have used for cub engines, how did they get broken, on installation, piston ring pliers prevent that and make sure to set end gaps so they do not break on install

Yup. Hastings, good.

Try your auto parts store. You may be able to purchase the rings for one piston. Also search the internet.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Rings are very brittle material. It is easy to break during the install or break-in.

Minimally expand the rings to install onto a piston. A lot of guys "roll" the rings into place. Put the back side of the ring into the intended groove and rotate the ring over the piston (twists the ring slightly). Expand the ring as minimally as possible to slip the ring fully into the groove.
Always populate your piston from the Oil ring upward (bottom groove to the top groove)

If it broke during break-in, then there may not have been enough room (end gap) for the ring to thermally expand. Other issues may also occur related to the cylinder shape. Example: oblong cylinder walls or a ridge at the top that was not removed. Check the ring in the cylinder (many places in the cylinder) to make sure that the end gap stays consistent. Any indication of a tight spot would require cylinder boring or other machine work.

There was a time, years ago, when Hastings rings had a bad reputation. Many mechanics thought they wore the cylinder bore excessively. I’ve heard no further negative comments on them, over the past 30 years. More modern piston ring designs, by all manufacturers have changed things a bunch. I think they are all quite acceptable.

Your CaseIH dealer has pretty good prices on rings. They would probably have to order .020 over but they come in pretty quickly.
Other options are to order them from a parts store such as NAPA. Find an older gentleman working at such places who can look it up in a paper catalog.
Other options can include online sources. Here are a couple of popular choices, though I have no idea what quality of part you might receive:

I have a question, are you installing these rings on .020 over pistons, are trying to install them on standard pistons?
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

They would go on easier on a standard piston, it's smaller.

But then there won’t be enough end gap to keep them from seizing unless they have been gapped to specifications.

You are correct and I know that, my point was I think he would have less chance breaking rings if it were a standard piston. This makes me believe he is useing the correct .020 over pistons. Also the fact that he knows what o.20 over rings are I would think he knows to use the right pistons.
