My 44 hp Cub mowering machine

Postby inairam » Mon Jun 13, 2022 6:14 am

OK 34 of the HP comes from 2 kohler engines.

I have been using this setup for about 5 years. The mowers are rough-cut styles like the C-2 or Woods 42 and can cut the same type of grass and small trees. I have two cubs set up for this. One is a '75 with a woods 42 ( shown) and the other is a '74 with a c-2.

The theoretical cut width is 11 feet but with the overlaps, it is about 10 feet. In second gear (3.2 MPH) that is a cut-rate of about 3.9 acres per hour which is about my experience on the flat flood plain I cut to a pasture height of 6-8 inches.

Can you post some pictures of your setup? And include details on the extra mower...brand, price, source?

What is the fuel use rate for the three combined?

About 1.5 gallons a hour total?

Dale sorry about that. Had the photo all ready and forgot to upload.

The mowers are made by a company called http://dirtyhandtools.com/product-categ ... sh-mowers/ They are listed as out of stock. I do like the engine and the deck a great deal but it is not designed well to work on. I had a lot of problems with the belt tensioner and ended up removing it and I just went from a B series belt to a C series belt to get the tension. Also there are no inserts in the deck so to remove the coverings you need to get a wrench on both sides of the deck. There is no access panel in the deck to get at the bolt that holds the blades on so you have to jack it up. And as you can see I can not keep mufflers on. It was not bad but I had so many problems with the first one ( it was an advanced protyle that should not have been sold they told me.) that they gave me a replacement the next year and I bought the return unit for $500.

I did not want to pay for a pro version of this and I did not think the swishers were heavy enough for my fields so I picked this one.
Over the years I have made modifications and have them more reliable now. If I were to do it again I would look at a different brand.

I am not sure but I want to say the Cub is about the gallon an hour and the Kohlers are about .5 to 1 an hour for both. I do not need to fuel up in 2-3 hours of cutting and the Kohlers still have about 1/2 a tank. One is 15 hp and one is 19 hp so they have slightly different fuel consumption.

Look at you GO! Nice setup! When mowing large, flat areas, looks like you've got it down to a science.

Thanks for sharing the pictures!

I know swisher makes one. There pretty pricy. And I bet it uses more gas than the cub!

I bet it's at least double that, maybe triple. My Zero turn uses about a gallon or a touch more an hour.

Mine was half of what current prices are and as I mentioned I paid $500 for the one that was supposed to be returned. The pro versions were $4-6K when I was looking. I felt the investment was necessarily being the only person cutting I needed to dramatically reduce the time and effort spent just cutting grass so I could do other things.

If you look for tow-behind trail mowers or rough-cut mowers for ATV movers. Swisher is the lower end and DR is a step or two up and then there are more companies with less familiar names in the pro range. I was never able to find a used one for sale in my area. By the time I got to a seller, it would be gone.
