1979 IH Cub

Postby CapeCodCubs » Thu Jul 14, 2022 8:51 pm

Hi,

I picked up a 1979 IH Cub last weekend, it is serial number 253,165 and is yellow.
I bought it mostly to have a strong Cub with high rpms for me to put a Howard Rotavator w/despeeder on it .

But I also bought it the for the collectabititly point of view as it is one of a few hundred made. It has a few tin issues so kind of leads me to want to paint and paint it Red. Al Jones...big smile?

Would doing that lower it's value?

I will work on getting some pictures up.

Here is how I look at it.

Being a fan of the square nosed Cubs, just my opinion, but I would only paint it the original color.

I like them both yellow and white, and I like the red ones too.

My 68 is special to me, because it was the first tractor I ever bought, so if I get my wish to restore it, it will be yellow and white, just like IH made it!

But I respect you as the owner of that one, and can paint it as you wish! :)

I think as a general rule original paint is more collectible than repainted. Painted with the correct paints and colors and properly would be #2. Changing color to the red if done with the correct paints and colors and properly would be #3.

It is your tractor so do what you want. If you repaint it go to sell it just make sure you disclose it was repainted and the color charged.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Thank you Peter and Sam,
The tractor really doesn't look good original...as I saw Glen comment in the other re-paint red post that I missed at first...that the yellow and white Cubs did look sharp when new. True, they really do. The paint combo fails with age. Not so much with the red ones with a nice patina.
I would follow the correct paint codes as well. We did a really good job on the last Cub we painted. Tough decision...
