Points 1973 cub

Postby Shadowrider69 » Wed Aug 03, 2022 8:09 am

I recently purchased my grandfather's tractor, the same tractor that I learned to drive on. After my grandfather passed my uncle got it and then sold it almost right away. Why don't people keep things that remind them of thier past. Sad but anyway my question is about the points. The plastic/fiberglass bigger part that hits the lobes on the original ones were on the bottom. On the new ones the plastic/fiberglass piece is bigger on the top. Does it matter?

I'm not sure just what you are trying to describe. A picture would help. But there have been occasional reports of replacement ignition points that were assembled with the rub block turned around backwards. It sounds like you have run into another one of them. Go back and get a properly assembled one. Take your original points with you so you can verify before bringing them home (assuming you picked them up locally).

Many people have very painful pasts. And reminders hurt.

Yes, I have encountered the backward rub block, pretty sure they were Tisco. If those are installed, the timing would be a mile off and will never run. If the distributor were turned, to put it in time, it still won’t run because now the rotor is out of phase. I didn’t install them.

Good for you getting a family tractor back in the family. You have came to the right place to get help, answers and support.
It sounds like a mis-made set of points. Maybe order a new set and see what they look like. I have good luck with NAPA points, and always keep a set or two in the cabinet in the tractor shed. I think one set fits most of the 40's - 70's 4 cylinder engines, if I remember right.
To your second question, an answer is not as easy..
I have a lot of memories with many of my Dad's tractors. I have my own, and some of them were projects that we worked on together.
Dad is unable to do anything, now and those days are over. To hang on to memories that we made, I will probably try and keep too many of his things when that time comes, and that is probably not good either...

Some people just dont have any connection to material things, and thus dont keep them. Others need cash flow for new projects, so they sell off things to fund raise. Some dont have the ability to work on them, or a place to keep them. Lots of reasons I guess.

Good luck on your project.

Not to mention you'd be up to your eyeballs in someone else's junk for the rest of your life, and it would compound with each generation.
