Re: Oil The Generator
Hi,
You didn't say what year Cub you have.
Below is a page from the 1955 Cub operator's manual, it is the Lubrication Table, it says use 20 wt motor oil to oil the generator.
I can't find that in my area, if they don't have it where you are, I would say use light motor oil, 10W-30 is probably ok.
http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... e%2024.jpg
The page below is the Lubrication Guide, it shows the places on a Cub that need oil or greasing.
http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... e%2025.jpg
The page below tells how much oil to put in the oil cups at number 14.
There are 2 oil cups, one near each end of the gen, the front one is on the outer diameter of the gen.
http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... e%2027.jpg
The original gen is a Delco with a model plate on it.
If you have another brand of gen someone put on, it might not have oil cups, I don't know what new gens have.
If you haven't read a Cub operator's manual, the experts on here recommend people read it. They have lots of info.
There are different years of operator's manuals at the top of the page at Cub Info, then go to Rudi's Manuals.

Re: Oil The Generator
3 in 1 Oil makes a SAE-20 wt oil in a convenient bottle that can dispense the oil in drops as the manual says. I’m a novice cub owner, but that seems to be in spec and it seems to be working well. I’m sure if this product is garbage in this application, somebody will be along shortly that will correct me.

And while you are there oil the fan hub. It’s something like 500 hour frequency…but never hurts to top it off.

Re: Oil The Generator
As stated the manual which is available for free here shows where oil holes are and they type and frequency at which you should oil everything. This has diagrams and shows the spots which will be better than we could ever try to convey to you through words.

Re: Oil The Generator
Hi,
Below is a page from the 1955 Cub operator's manual, telling how to lube the fan hub.
The original fan hubs use light motor oil for lube.
They can get low if nobody checks them, then the fan bearing can wear, or the fan can seize up.
http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... age-26.jpg
I use a pump oil can to put clean, light motor oil in the hub.
Be careful to not lose the small gasket that should be on the oil filler screw, it might be stuck on the hub.
You can give the hub a partial oil change by putting in the oil like the manual says, put in the filler screw, then turn the engine over 10 or 15 times, then drain the excess oil out, like the manual says.
Oil might run out the rear of the fan hub when you put it in up to the filler screw, then turn it, there is no oil seal at the rear of the original fan hubs.

Re: Oil The Generator
afternoon all.. thanks for info.. yeh thanks for tip fo manual.. i have mine. so old those table charts were not much use. ill look at for the link you mention...
yes. mine is a 1966 IH cub lo boy... i did the 3 or 4 drops now...boy thats not much oil , is it.?
still have a 'squeak' as i move the rotor on it..
i know it is not to squeak at all.. maybe a little squeak is not harmful. [maybe it takes a while too for those 3 drops to make there way all around inside too.
thanks.
ill see if any of you all have any other comments.. in the meantime...
i will make a new post.. for the other project of repair [as long as i have the hood off now]
electrical system and fuse holder...
thanks

Re: Oil The Generator
Hi,
Sometimes the generator brushes can make squeaking sounds when you turn the armature, or front pulley.
I think I saw one that squeaked when turned backwards.
It might not be the bearing or bushing squeaking, but I'm not there to see it.
The 1955 Cub operator's manual says put 8 - 10 drops of motor oil in the generator oil cups.
The 1965 Cub and LoBoy operator's manual says the same amount as the the 1955 page I posted in my 1st post above.
Below is the 1965 manual page. It is at number 22 on the page.

Re: Oil The Generator
When you oil the cups for the generator it will take a while to reach the bushings or bearings because it is being soaked up by a wick. It has to soak through the wick to get where it is needed.

Re: Oil The Generator
BTW...thanks all...took your advise.... put in oil.. in both oil ports.. 3-4 drops it seems is the standard.. pulley still moves freely, as it did before i started this task... and it still squeaks as it did before... :0/
not sure anything else i can 'EASILY' Do, at this point. to stop the squeak... [the original problem was a broken ,fairly new, generator belt that got me to notice the squak.... i guess at this point .. i put up with the squak... [ i took somepicture of it all. but not sure how , if possible to post them ]..
good night folks.
scott..

Re: Oil The Generator
The squawk is pretty normal, it’s just the brushes rubbing on the armature. Put a new belt on and forget about it, you’ll never hear it when running.
