I pulled a 4 row 450 IH with my cub,--- the 4 rows was too wide to fit my other gates so I cut the outside rows off making a 2 row. Cub dont know its back there. I have several sets of plastic plates for it as well. You have to remember that you do NOT have external hydraulic power on a cub so your limited to ground lift or fully mounted units.

I picked up a JD 290 a while back. From the spoked wheels I'm guessing it is from ~1940. Unfortunately I'm still working on fixing it up. Got one of the planters cleaned up--working on the second now. So keep in mind I haven't used it in the field--but if you have any questions and think I could help, just drop me a message.

I agree with Jim Becker and others that a single row planter would likely be a better option in this case for a few acres. For me, I got the 290 at a good price and I like cleaning up old iron. So if the 290 is in working condition and you can get get at decent price, I think it sounds like a good plan.

Probably a few people out there that have a fast hitch tool-bar with 2 JD 71s on it or the IH 185s behind their Cub.

The JD 71 is a very good plate planter (Yetter still makes them) as is the IH 185 or 295. They're easy to adapt to a Cub or similar with or without FH.

I don't have experience with the JD 290 but there were a lot of them made over a long period of time. I suspect that JD parts for the older planters are easer to get than IH but I don't know. Seems like the older JD plate planters have a very good reputation.

I've got a pair of Allis Chalmers planters I intend to adapt to my Super A with FH. The hoppers/plates are very similar to JD and I think they'll work until I can find my "dream" 2 row planter:

It is. When I was a kid in the early 80s we had a 4 row version. I'd like to find one to go with my IH 404.

We had that same planter in 4 row when I was a kid. Dad would pull it behind the 730 diesel with electric start. He wouldn't buy batteries for it (took four 6V) so he would wake my brother or me up early before school and get us to help him pull start it with the 1020.

One day I came home from school and his truck was gone and the tractor was in the back yard running.

He got home about 20 minutes later and I ask him why was the tractor running? He said I ran out of seed and didn't know when you would be home to get it cranked so I left it running

I picked up a 71 like in your pic, except mine has the double disc openers!

I prefer the double disc openers!

I didn't even know 71s were offered with runner openers. Every one I ever saw had disk openers.

Look closely in the pic you posted.

The Deere manual also shows it as optional

Yes that was my point. This photo is the only 71 I've ever seen set up that way. They seem to have always been ordered in this neck of the woods with dd openers.
