Mounting 2nd wheel weights inside - hardware?

Postby Workinprogress » Sat Feb 11, 2023 8:25 am

I just picked up a second set of wheel weights for my cub and was interested in mounting them on the inside of the rim. Any suggestions on the best hardware mounting options?

I do have my wheel dishes turn out and the outside wheel weights
mounted the typical way (see photo below).

in the parts manual they use two long wheel bolds and two short bolts when mounting doubles. 1/2 x 3" and 1/2 x 6. They are shown as two on the outside.

One on the inside you will also have to check/ adjust the rim disk mounting to make sure you have clearance. It may force you to dish the disk out instead of the normal in. I personally would do two on the outside. I do not like the look of weights and disks dished out.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

To mount non split weights on the inside of the wheel I think you also have to take the spindles off. Longer 1/2 inch nc

carriage bolts cut to length. I would think mounting on the outside is the most practical..

Weights should fit over the rear axles easy enough. I have a set on the inside of one of my Loboys. I prefer the look of double weights on the outside as opposed to one in and one out.

Keep in mind, if you go with one in and one out, you will need to use hex head bolts since a carriage bolt would not have a square hole for the head to seat in and grip.

It looks like your centers are dished in.

I think they are dished out with the weights on backward.

After getting a better look, I stand corrected.

I guess that all depends on your wheel tread width setting.

I believe I looked at doing this, but don't think I have enough room between the wheel centers and final drives.

I am running 40" wheel tread centers with 8.3 tires on a Fast -Hitch Cub and not willing to go any wider! I like the minimal space to store the tractor and I also cultivate 30" rows with it.

Not sure whether the 44" tread setting would work either.

You might have to go centers out in the 48" setting for it to work.

I did do this on a larger Deere tractor.http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=112105&sid=817db9e402ff89e1276521a51b0a4fa3
It is running 13.6-28s on 59" centers. You can see the one outside weight, but can not see the inside weight.

I set the weight on cardboard on the concrete with the bolts facing up, then set my tire / rim / wheel center assembly on top, then added the second weight, then snugged up the nuts, gave a heave-ho, stood the whole thing up on the tread and reattached to the tractor.

Cant remember if I torqued the wheel weight bolts before or after reattaching to the tractor though.

I guess the possibility exists to use 2 sets of 2 of the single weight carriage bolts on a cub.

One set of 2 facing in for the inner weight, the other set of two facing out for the outer weight.

He is already set at 52" width so he should be good to go.

Ok, I see now! (Zoomed in)

Workinprogress,

You just need to decide whether you want 2 bolts per wheel weight, or 4 bolts in both sets.

Looks like you are currently using only 2 bolts per weight now.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I need to do some test fitting to see what I like best. The closer I look at things the more I am thinking about doubling them up on the outside. Using the threaded rod coupler and a set of longer carriage bolts.

Parts book shows two short and two long bolts for each weight. Just mount the first weight with two short bolts and then mount the second weight with two long bolts.

Thanks everyone!

After test fitting the weights on the outside and looking how much work it is to put them on the inside I went the easy way. Tractor ready for the 8-12” snow storm forecasted for Wednesday night/Thursday.

Sugaring season is starting up for me so cub seat time will be low for the next 3-4 weeks :tractor:

Looks awfully steamy in there!

Do you have a vent hood and big stack through the roof?

I just talked to a guy yesterday that has 22,000 taps in!

My operations is a lot smaller than that. I run around 90 taps and usually make 15-20 gals of syrup.

The cupola opens up on the roof to let steam out.
