Brake drum key problem
I am working on brakes on my 49 cub. First side did not have a key on the brake drum. I ordered replacements from TM. The replacement key doesn't fit and seems substantially thicker than the slots on the axle and drum. TM shows that all years use the same woodruff. Anyone else ever have this issue? Is the move to take a file to the slots and see if a bit of clean-up makes the difference?

Should be the same key with all of them. I'd say your slot just has a burr on it is why it won't fit.

Re: Brake drum key problem
Hi,
If the keyways are smaller, and not just rough or something, you could take the parts to NAPA or an auto parts store that has keys, and try to fit a key in the slots.
The key should be a snug fit in both keyways.
Maybe the parts were replaced in the past, and were made to use a smaller size key, I don't know, I'm not there to see them.

Re: Brake drum key problem
Check it in the drum as well, you said substantially smaller, which makes me think different size, and not just a burr issue....But as stated, we are not there to assess. Other suggestions are valid, just wanted to be sure you were looking at both parts before deciding a course of action.

Re: Brake drum key problem
Thanks all. Key was too thick for drum and axle slots. I will make a trip to Napa.
