Got the lights working yesterday. The previous owner said he wasn't sure what was wrong with them, never really looked at it. I figured I'd start with the simple stuff first. Check the bulbs. Well they were totally burned out. Someone must have turned them on with a 12v battery or something hooked up and fried them. Got some new bulbs in town and installed them and they turned right on nice and bright! I was looking for 1133 bulbs but the auto parts store in town only had 1129. They seem to work just fine though.

I got a new set of good used tie rods to install one day too since one of mine is bent pretty bad. Also got a good used brake band. That looks like a more involved job, so I'll probably wait until summer to mess with that.

Got my new IH gas cap in the mail the other day too. Fits perfect. Hopefully it won't leak when I fill the tank up next time.

My front tires are pretty sad looking though. Lots of dry rot cracks in them. They hold air though, just don't look too nice. Was thinking of getting a pair of 4 ply 4.00-12 implement tires, similar to what's on there now. Probably do that later in the summer as well. Really enjoying tinkering with the old tractor though, it's a lot of fun!

I don’t think your tie rods look that bad. I’ve seen much worse. Once you have the replacements installed, you can straighten the originals using a hydraulic press.

The one you can see in the pic above is straight. The other one is the one that is bent. It's not terrible, but it's not straight. Figured I'd replace it since I found a nice set of used ones for not too much.

Sounds like you need to haul your Cub to The Bash next month.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Bill,
It’s currently 36 degrees, with snow and rain showers here. I hope you’re going to arrange better weather for next month. :D

You mentioned earlier that the PO had a 12-volt battery in it. So this is quite likely. By the way, it is possible to blow the lights if they are on with the engine running and the battery is unhooked (mainly on the cut-out systems).

Hi,
It says online that a 1129, 6 volt bulb has less candlepower than a 1133, 6 volt bulb.
The 1949 Cub owner's manual says the front lights use 1133 bulbs.
Maybe you would want to change to 1133 bulbs.
I sent you a PM.

I was checking out the Cub Fest online. Looks cool! I’d like to come check it out. I don’t have a trailer to haul my tractor though. Would probably just come to check things out for the day. Maybe I could get some tips on how to change the brakes.

Yep he had a 12v battery when I bought it because he said the 6v wouldn’t start it. It just needed new heavy gauge cables. Either way it’s all good now!

Yeah I wanted to get 1133s but couldn’t find them anywhere locally so I just got some 1129s. I honestly don’t plan on using the tractor at night at all, I just wanted the lights to work because I don’t like when things don’t work like they should. They look brighter than I thought they would be for 6v bulbs. Maybe I’ll change them out one day in the future. For now I’m just glad all the lights work.

U-Haul rents a trailer that's perfect for transporting a Cub. If you're coming that distance, I would plan on Friday and Saturday. If you bring the parts, you'd be surprised what gets accomplished at a Cubfest.

I rented a double axle trailer to pick it up when I bought it. Probably overkill. They have a smaller trailer that would likely work. The Cub really isn’t that big or heavy.

What do you mean if you bring the parts? Do people bring their tractors there to work on them?

Yes, they do, that is what a Cubfest is all about.
