Mower Question
Hi all, I’m having pto issues with my cub. It’ll take a lot of work to fix the issue. I was wondering if they were any mowers that work well in taller grass without the pto? Like the reel mowers or something along those lines. Any information would be appreciated!!

Re: Mower Question
What's wrong with your PTO?
Unless you have to replace the main clutch shaft, PTO repair is fairly simply and not that expensive. Here's an earlier post that might help:

Which mower are you currently trying to use? It seems it would be quicker and less expensive to repair your PTO vs. buying a different mower.

Re: Mower Question
The pto keeps grinding and popping out of gear after putting in a new pto shift lever.

Re: Mower Question
Your problem is probably causing the shifter wear, which is only the secondary issue. The post above talks about an older style PTO shaft with the STAKED bearing. These stakings can wear down allowing a forward movement of the bearing which, in turn, allows rearward movement of the shaft. It doesn't take much movement to disengage the PTO.
If you grab the rear end of the PTO shaft, try moving it forward and back...there should be NO movement.
If this does turn out to be the problem. I recommend that you replace the old PTO shaft with the newer style where the bearing is held in place with a snap ring, such as this one from TM Tractors:
http://www.tmtractor.com/new/pt/514fp.htm
The snap ring comes with the bearing, but you might be able to find one separately:

Re: Mower Question
Reel Mowers are finishing mowers for short/medium grass like 1-3inches tall. Anything taller than that will cause the reels to get clogged and lockup. I would try to repair the PTO you will be happy when it’s fixed!

Re: Mower Question
If it was my Cub I would replace the PTO Shaft and Bearing with the parts from TM Tractor(don’t forget the seal and gasket for the PTO housing). Follow the link that Dale put together….It really doesn’t seem to be a difficult job but of course I will leave that opinion to the reader since everyone has their limitations.

Re: Mower Question
Your only option that I know of without the PTO is a tow behind rough cut mower. But that will cost you more than fixing the PTO.
These are rough-cut mowers with blades that are hinged like your wood 42 ( which is arguably the best mower for the cub).

Re: Mower Question
You said you replaced the lever and pin, but did you replace the clutch. I've done a couple where the splines were worn just enough from working with a worn pin, that they wouldn't engage properly and grind or "kick out". I replaced the clutch, pin, and lever. No more problems.
Why is there never enough time to do the job right, but always enough time to do it over.
