oil coming out the shifter

Postby 52DAVE » Fri Jun 16, 2023 10:07 pm

I used my disk with my 52 for a couple hours today. The field was ruff but the gas tank cap didn't leak like last time. Just before I headed home I went over the edge next to the road. It was very ruff. When I looked down by the shift lever it had oil coming out the top between the shift rod and the round cover attached to it. I didn't think that was possible. I looked in the service manual but it doesn't show much of any thing. I would think any oil that splashed up there would just drip back in to the trans. It appears that there isn't any seal there at all. The oil would have to splash nearly straight up from the trans. Am I correct or is there some thing I'm missing.

You may have water in the transmission raising the overall fluid level to very near the top.

Hi,
The transmission oil can leak out the shifter when the Cub is in use, I saw one that did it in the past.

If you have ever run a Cub with the shifter cover off the transmission, the oil is REALLY splashed EVERYWHERE!

As Raymond said, perhaps the transmission has water in it, or is just overfilled. One of my 5 cubs is prone to seeping out that area, too.

Another thought…
How loose is your shifter? The lower cup can break off the shifter. The cup acts to register the shifter in the transmission cover, but also provides a deflector of sorts to keep the oil from slinging up and out of the cover.

I drained the trans and put new lube in it to the level plug this spring. The shifter moves quite freely. About what I would expect it to. I guess I'll have to take the cover off and check the lower cup this summer. I could be wrong but it seems to me that if the lower cup were broke off that the lever would move up and down or that the spring pushing the upper cover down would be loose. I'll have to check it out.

I rebuilt my shifter this year. Re-welded the cup, sealed the shaft with an oring, changed the oil. first few times I ran it after....oil coming out the top

I was thinking this same thing. Mostly full of water.

I use mine pretty regularly, I have oil seeping from lots of places up top shifter included , I just figured it was acceptable for a few hrs use on a weekly basis . I hope when I'm 70+ years old I'm in half as good of shape as any one of my cubs .

The full level is well below the shifter. It must have been a very rough ride or quite a slope.
