Front wheels

Postby goxu1 » Sat Jun 17, 2023 3:16 am

Apart from the colour , do these 2 wheels appear to be originals ?
The all red one I believe was from a pic I saved of an unrestored cub and the other is mine which has been painted
Just wondering if my wheel is an original or repro?

They both look original, to me. Many machines used a wheel with the same appearance, the difference being the rim width. If they are 3” wide rims, they are Cub wheels.

My understanding is that all front wheels, and rear rims, used during Cub production were supplied by contract suppliers like Goodyear, Firestone, Motor Wheel, etc.

There should be ID markings stamped on the back of the wheel center.

In the bottom picture, the gaps around the rim look a little different than what I am familiar with. If you study the parts manuals you may see if there was a wheel part number change around the time yours was made. If you look at the 37F manual all of the pictures of the cubs models appear to have the same style of front wheel.

The real issue with your tractor is if something was done differently for wheels/ tires for export that may not be as well documented.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

The bottom one looks like the repro wheel sold by TM Tractor Parts and also available on Ebay. As mentioned, the gaps appear larger than original.

Hmmm, can't seem to link to an image on TM?

I haven't paid enough attention to the now-available wheels to notice a difference. They definitely look different in the above pictures. There were (are?) ASAE standards for wheel designs. I imagine both the above wheels conform to the standard. Most of them will have a stamp near the center that identifies the manufacturer. IH made a lot of them and included the part number along with the IH logo. Many of them are marked "EWC" for Electric Wheel Company. I think the wheel/tire assemblies straight from the tire companies were more common with rear tires. I haven't seen any documentation on it being done with the small fronts like the Cub's.

Looking at TM's picture archive , he has both 2.5" and 3.5" shown
The 4 slots on each rim look different
What cubs used the 2.5" wheels

Only one 12" wheel is shown. The other is a 15" wheel used on the Hi-Crop.

The original wheels are 2.5” and the aftermarket wheels are 3.0” , The parts book lists the 2.5” x 12” wheel and the 3.0” x 15” wheel for the front.

Ok , true , I didn't see the different diameter

Mine must be 3" as they look to have a deeper dish. Wasn't sure if my eyes were playing tricks or not

Do original front wheels have rivets holding the centre to the rim ?
