Hey guys!
I am attempting to grow some sweet corn this year, being time to cultivate wanted to put a pair of shields i got some years ago, and was unsuccessful at fastening them on.
Does someone have a picture of the set up with 144 cultivators and plant shields, and how to put them on properly?
Looking through all my print outs etc , couldn’t find instructions only found 1 sketch
Also, how do i go about cultivating corn? Speed? Do youhave to make more than 1 pass?
Thank you
Howard

Re: Cultivator plant shield help
I thought illustration 21C on page 21 made installation of the most common shields pretty obvious. They just clamp on with a u-bolt (that is closer to a V). Maybe that isn't what you have. How about a picture if you are still having a problem?
Do you even need shields at this point? Shields are used to keep from burying the corn plants during early cultivation. By now, I would expect you to be past that point. You set the inner shovels (or half sweeps or whatever) fairly close to the row to get as many weeds as possible but not so close (or so deep) that you damage the corn roots. Check illustration 10B on page 10. Speed, you want to go slow enough to not bury the corn plants but preferably fast enough to bury small weeds that are directly in the row of corn. The larger the corn, the faster you can go. One pass should be enough for one cultivation. After a while, new weeds may call for another pass which means it is time to do the whole job over.
The subjective terms "slow enough", "fast enough", etc. depend on your specific situation, plant size, soil type and moisture, ground tool type, etc. You need to experiment a little. For a rank beginner, If you have a little bare ground you can try it in you might try that before you get on a real row of corn.
I hope you are looking at the same edition of the cultivator manual that I am (Cub-144 Cultivator 5-12-65).

Re: Cultivator plant shield help
there are two different styles of plant shields, , the mounting brackets are different between the two types, one clamps with a V type bolt for shank type cultivators, if you have the spring type they fasten with two nuts where the spring type mounts

Re: Cultivator plant shield help
I agree the corn at this point should be big enough to not need a shield unless you just planted in the last month or so. If it's early go slow to not cover the corn, but if it's tall enough throw the dirt to them as long as the top is out of the dirt that way it covers any grass in the row.

Re: Cultivator plant shield help
Thanks guys for info
I got my corn in late, but agree now the corn is tall enough not to need shields
The shields i have are L & R individuals ( similar to the 122)with a single bar extending out the front of each , rather than the two swinging bars
I see what you mean Jim on the mounting with the “ v” bolt & bracket
Is there a link for me to review how to resize & post a picture? ( its been a while)

I just use my phone. Save a screenshot of it and then edit the quality down even further. They have to be ridiculously low quality for this site to accept them. I'm talking like internet 20 years ago small.
