52 cub Radiator Bolts

Postby dblact38 » Sat Jul 29, 2023 9:25 am

I am replacing my Radiator but would like to install new stainless steel bolts. The Manual said there are 14 @ 5/16x7/8 and 4@ 5/16x3/4 . My question is , I could purchase either 1" long or 3/4 long would that 1/8 " be too long for the 14 bolts or if i use 3/4 would that be too short unfortunately my cub is not close by to try the bolts Thanks for all your help Gary

You could screw a few of them in and see if they bottom out in the bolt holes. If they do bottom out, you might be able to add a heavy washer on them. Be sure to run a tap or thread chaser all the way to the bottom of all holes, to be sure all the threads are available to use. Blow any debris out of the holes with compressed air.

Boltdepot.com has a vast selection of hardwear I have use for years. Tips for bolt extraction…..used your favorite penetrating oil and let them soak for a long time before you start busting bolts off!!! Also when you go to install the SS bolts remember to put some Never Seize lubricant on those threads. Stainless Steel is subject to galling of the threads if not added.

McMaster carr will have them as well. I use 18-8 ss hardware a lot on my cubs.

I would chase the holes with a cleaning tap to clean the hole and lube the hole before inserting the SS. The stainless tends to gall and is not as strong as steel so they break easier. Clean treads and some lube will help a great deal to reduce the chances of broken bolts.
