Only one headlight works.

Postby Josh_boro » Thu Aug 03, 2023 1:39 pm

Hello, I just replaced my battery the other day on my 47 cub. It has the original 6v electrical system. The lights worked prior to the battery swap but now do not work. Just the front headlight works now on the right side. The rear light does not work as well.

Assuming your tractor electrical system is still positive ground, you can run a jumper from the battery negative to the light terminal of the non-working headlight or taillight. If the bulbs are good and it still does not work, the likely cause is corrosion. Remember the lights use their metal housing to make a ground connection to complete the circuit. So any corrosion on the bolted connection of the light housing to the bracket/tractor frame must also be clean.

As Bill said ground is the most likely issue with the teardrop lights of the early cubs. Bulb number 2. Number 3 have voltage on the wire.

To ensure continuity to the ground, I remove all rust and paint on the mating surfaces on the headlight mounts and use conductive electrical grease on them back to and including the sheet metal on the mating surfaces. use gloves the black grease gets all over but it cleans up on the paint easily enough.

I will also use conduct grease on the bolts that mount the dash to the torque tube and the screws that mount the dash to the hood. Maybe overkill but I have outside tractors so on electrical I make an extra effort.

Not being electrically savvy, would the ground to metal apply to a 1965 Loboy (12V). I recently had the front left headlight go out and replaced it with a brand new bulb. Still doesn't light up while the front right light and taillight both do.
