Crack on Engine Mount of 1955 Cub

Postby bookman51 » Sun Aug 27, 2023 8:29 pm

I will see if I can attach some pictures, but I found a crack on the right front engine mount of my 1955 Cub. Is it fixable, and if so how? The Cub is mostly a parade tractor, but I assume the crack has gotten worse with what little driving I do of it. :help:

I tried to add an attachment of a picture of the problem but I got an error message saying file too big? :lost:

I had same file to large problem . I moved photo to my desktop opened it up and in the top tool bar on top of page there was a line called adjust size
I adjusted size so picture was less than 500 kb and I was able to post pictures

looks like it was repaired before and hidden under the paint, clean some of the paint off so damage can be seen better

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this crack is in the bolster, not the "ear" of the engine where we normally see cracks.

You might post a photo of the ENGINE side down near the hose from the steering housing. As mentioned, this is the "normal" location of cracks.

Both the engine motor mounts on the block have been welded too. I figure it is at best a parade tractor with its working days over. I will try to get bolster welded, but I am reluctant to put the time and money into installing a good bolster when the engine mounts are another weak point. Now if the welding does not work, I may have to in order to salvage the tractor.

I would not put money in a weld. To do it properly you have to remove it anyway. I think very few welders today really know how to weld cast.

JP tractor castings are boiled and inspected so you at least know you are working with good parts. Are you up for a rebuild of the engine?

Maybe consider a parts tractor or a new project and this is the parts tractor. That is a hard one.

Contact Berlin (Bezirk on the forum). He is the one who was having them made.

look around more on the engine ears, probably more welds under the paint, whom ever did that welding was not a welder, they just globed on some weld and tried to hide it all with paint

Yep, I agree. And yes there are more welds. I inherited the tractor from a relative 20 year ago. I thought I could fix it back up, but the cracked steering bolter and perhaps cracked and welded engine mounts are a challenge. Thanks

If the engine ear welds have been there for twenty years and haven’t broken, I would let them be. That assumes very light use in the future. The crack in the steering bolster could be problematic, though.
