I'm thinking of making a float gauge for setting the float height on the ih cub carburetor. I'm envisioning this thing being a small metal square, kind of like a carpenters square, made out of 1/8" key stock. somewhere ive got a bunch of foot long sticks of the stuff. so the first piece has to exact length of 1 15/16" then welded or brazed to the end another piece about an inch long.
is this 1 15/16" correct to measure from the inside of the carb cover to the of bottom of float when holding carb top upside down?

Re: cub ih caruretor float gauge
I use the decimal equivalent. 1.4" for float height and 1.6' for float drop. Cut a piece of stock 1.6" long, then put a notch on one end that is 1.4" long. Float height is from the gasket surface without the gasket to the top of the float, drop is from the gasket surface to the same place on the float (float is hanging down).

Re: cub ih caruretor float gauge
Hi,
The spec for the float level for the IH carburetor in the Cub service manual is 1 13/32".
Bob's measurements of 1.6", and 1.4" are easier to use.
Below is a page from the Cub service manual showing the measurements. It has the Zenith carb too. Be sure to use the IH carb measurements, if you have an IH carb.
The float level is measured like the pic of the Zenith carb in the lower right pic, with the top half upside down. The gasket between the halves has to be off, like was said above.
The IH and Zenith carbs are different in that way.

Then turn the top half right side up to measure the float drop.
The float has to be installed with the tab facing up, the tab controls the float drop.
Below is a pic from TM Tractor Parts of a new float and the tab.
Be sure the float is in good condition, and has no gas inside it.

I think Bob's post explains it pretty well. If not, let me know and I'll post some more photos. Ask Bob.

Re: cub ih caruretor float gauge
Sorry for the delay. The two attached photos show how the gauge is used to measure float height (1.4") and float drop (1.6"). Note that the measurements are made without the gasket in place.

Re: cub ih caruretor float gauge
Bob McCarty thank you so much for the float gauge I picked it up today at post office and had a full day of Cub work and I think your float gauge brought me some luck too because today I found my original IH carb that has been missing for at least ten years, I have gone through the carb yet but I will very soon. Thanks so much!!!!
