Refuses to restart
I have been doing some late season mowing out back using a Mott mower. This is mostly quack grass and various other weeds that hasn't been mowed since June. Although the cub handles it ok every once in a while I have to lift the mower a bit to keep it going, a cub isn't exactly a powerhouse. Three times I didn't get to the lift quick enough and stalled the engine after the tractor had been running for a while. All three times it would refuse to restart. Not even an occasional pop. After letting it sit for an hour or more it fires right up. The engine does not appear to be hot. But the coil is quite hot to the touch. Coil is my first thought. Any other thoughts out there? Vern

Re: Refuses to restart
Thanks. Electrical is not a strong point for me, to understate it and electrical parts are non returnable. Coil is on the way. OEM "appearing" coil more than twice the price of aftermarket. So I ordered cheap one just like me! Finished mowing today with fingers crossed and hope for no more until spring. After I finished I found the belt had two cuts in it down to the cords so off to a local supplier to get a belt. Had to order that too. Told him no hurry, I shouldn't need it before March. And so it goes. Vern

Hi,
The older Battery Ignition unit coils are a smaller diameter than modern coils, and have wire connections at both ends.
If you put on a newer style coil, with the wire connections all at the same end, if it is a bigger diameter than the old coil, you would need a coil bracket that fits the new coil.
Below are listings at TM Tractor Parts, you can look at the pics.

You could check the ignition timing with a timing light, and see if it is right. The timing makes a difference in the power of the engine.
The Cub service manual says use a timing light when the Cub has a Battery Ignition unit.
