Old Oil Filters

Postby indy61 » Thu Sep 28, 2023 8:03 am

I have a couple unused oil filters from the late 50's or early 60's that are in good condition. No rust or any damage and in the original boxes. Do you think it's safe to still use them? I guess I'm worried the paper element inside them might be weakened from age.

Personally, I wouldn't simply because I don't know what I don't know....Not for $10

On the other hand, they are probably better than what you can buy today. I think I would get something dull on the end and poke around the paper to see if it is dry rotted

Trash them, and take all the worry out of the equation.

Hi,
That's interesting you have oil filters that are that age, you didn't say if they are for a Cub, I guess you meant they are.
I wouldn't throw them away after that long, they are good for a collection.
You didn't post pictures, it would be good to see them. :)

I would not use them either but you should keep them for a collection. If you don't want them take them to a swap meet. Some collector may swap them for new filters or the cash to get you a new filter or two

I agree, I wouldn't use the , they are worth more to the right collector than new ones, especially if they are in original boxes.

I wouldn't use them. Might be able to sell them on Ebay to a collector though.

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess I won't try to use them. I doubt they are worth anything as a collector item but kind of neat as they are different. The brand is WGB part # is S-77-CP, I've never heard of them but they show up in cross references for Cub filters. I will take some pics and post them later.

You'd be surprised what people will buy and collect on Ebay. It's worth taking a few photos and posting them up on there. If no one bites you have nothing to lose. Maybe you can get $20 or something for them. That'll help pay for a new filter for your Cub!

Neat. Never seen those. I assumed they would be IH which would be more desirable, I would think. I’d stick one on the shelf and test the market for the others. Someone here might be interested

Some WGB oil filters for sale on Ebay. $5- or $6- plus shipping. Opinion, not really worth selling on the internet.

Keep one. Take the remainder to next tractor fest and give to an IH/Cub collector.
I have an excuse. CRS.

If he has more than one he could sell them and net about $4 each and buy a new filter. If you have any collectibles just put it on the shelf with them.

I also thought we were talking about original IH filters in the box that would be desirable.
