57 cub compression

Postby Rob in NH » Mon Oct 02, 2023 7:11 pm

My 57 cub has been in storage for 4 years and I want get back to using it. I checked the compression and 3 cylinders are 90 pounds and #2 is 80. Is it worth putting new rings in it or do you think it is ok?

Think I would put solvent on top of each piston and SeaFoam is gas and oil, work the tractor hard for several hours. Then recheck the compression.

Compression doesn't come up, in block overhaul.
I have an excuse. CRS.

What should the compression be?

a decent old engine is about 100 lbs, these will run at 60lbs but have no power, I have checked the engines I rebuild before they go back to customers and most are 140-150 on a new tight engine
yes try seafoam, it eats carbon on the rings to loosen them up, its a cheap fix if it works, if it does not it did not cost enough to be upset over

I would do the seafoam soak in the spark plug holes and any other "miracle in a can" you want to try. Then get it running use the seafoam and retest after you have some time on the engine. You should also do a valve adjustment and remove the carb and or open it to full throttle and remove all spark plugs when you do the compression test.

If it has been sitting you do not want to use those numbers to make a decision. You want it running for a while to see how it really is after it wakes up.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!
